Phone App SCAMs are becoming more commonplace

In today’s fast-paced world, mobile payment apps like Cash App have made sending money as simple as tapping a few buttons. Whether you’re splitting a dinner bill with friends or paying for a service, it’s never been easier!

But here’s the thing: while Cash App brings convenience, it also attracts some not-so-friendly folks. These sneaky scammers use all kinds of tricks to steal your money or personal info. And, unlike a regular bank, Cash App doesn’t have buyer protection. So, if you get scammed, well…you’re out of luck, and getting your money back is like chasing a mirage in the desert.

Let’s break down the most common Cash App scams you need to watch out for—and more importantly, how to stay one step ahead of these scammers.

What Is a Cash App Scam?

A Cash App scam happens when someone tricks you into sending money or sharing your account information. These scammers aren’t picky—they’ll use whatever trick works. Here are some of the most common ways they try to get you:

• “We’re from Cash App Support.”
Scammers impersonate Cash App reps, asking for your login credentials or access to your device to “fix an issue.” Spoiler alert: they’re not fixing anything, except for emptying your account.

• “You’ve won a prize!”
They’ll send fake emails or texts saying you’ve won a contest and need to log in to claim your reward. The only thing you’ll win is a lesson in how not to fall for phishing.

• Accidental transfers.
Someone sends you money “by mistake” and then asks for it back, but that money was never theirs to begin with. You end up paying it back, and suddenly, you’re the one with a loss.

How to Protect Yourself from Cash App Scammers:

1. Never send money to someone you don’t know personally. Even if they promise you the world, or more likely, a prize.

2. Avoid clicking on suspicious links in texts, emails, or social media. If it smells fishy, it’s probably a phishing attempt.

3. Turn on transaction notifications so you’ll know right away if something weird is going on. Be the first to know!

4. Keep your Cash App PIN and account info private. Just like your Netflix password, don’t go sharing this with strangers!

5. Use a trusted security tool to keep your phone and data safe from scammers.

But here’s the thing: scams aren’t just limited to Cash App. The reality is, our phones are rapidly becoming a prime target for all kinds of scams—from phishing attempts to malware attacks, they’re everywhere. After all, our phones hold more private information than laptops or desktops, right?

*And don’t fool yourself into thinking you’re fully protected just because you have an iPhone. Scammers don’t care what device you have—Android, iPhone, flip phone from the early 2000s…they’ll find a way. That’s why it’s critical to secure your phone with a reliable mobile security app.

We have had what can only be described as one of the most complicated "scams" - A customer has a problem setting up their antivirus at home. They ended up connecting with a call centre operative who got into their laptop. Setup new passwords, a firewall and put the antivirus on for them. They then setup a new email account, a PayPal account and got them to pay over £150 using that PayPal account, which the operative dually closed to ensure that the customer could not get a refund!!!!!
So a fake Antivirus operative
A new email address
A change of passwords
A fake PayPal account

Once again please be careful and do not a) click on any links b) speak to anyone you do not know c) give anyone any money that you do not recognise d) ALLOW anyone on your computer

If in doubt pleas call us we can tell you if it is fake - we do not charge you for that advice and maybe just maybe we can save you a lot of money!
