As 2025 comes to a close, we want to recognise and acknowledge all those who have worked hard to ensure a safe, compliant, and well-managed workplace.

Health and Safety may not be widely reported, however, those working in this field are at the heart of the workplace, keeping employees safe, enhancing organisational standards, and creating a safer work environment for all.

This New Year, we expect many more advancements in Health and Safety, more efficient processes, an enhanced safety culture, and more informed decision-making.

We wish everyone a happy and productive New Year filled with expansion, collaboration, and continued efforts toward healthier and safer workplaces!

Moisture is frequently a hidden contributor that plays a significant role in creating an unsafe working environment; therefore, facility managers need to take proactive measures against moisture before it occurs to minimise injury due to slip-and-fall accidents.

Using multiple levels of approach will allow facility managers greater flexibility in how they manage the risk of slip-and-fall injuries while providing greater safety from injury "on the floor" for employees.

It also increases the effectiveness of the operations as well as decreasing the cost of accident-related injuries.

It’s not always the most visible work, but it makes a real difference.

As the population becomes older and as younger employees cope with many problems, organisations must take an interest in the needs of their employees of all ages.

This will ensure the safety and engagement of everyone. To provide support for all employees, organisations must provide effective communication and have inclusive policies and customised training programs.

It is important to provide all employees with a supportive environment; where everyone feels valued and secure, in order to minimise the chances of occupational injuries and fatalities and enhance the overall level of morale.

The‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ starting point of BS 30417 is a direct response to the loud call for necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) that embraces everybody, since the conventional ones have been found to be the most frequent causes of unprotected portions of the workforce.

As 80% of women report that they do not fit properly and many of them are at risk due to ill-fitting PPE, this newly introduced standard is a step in the right direction for producing PPE that is not only for different body shapes but also for different abilities.

Through an inclusive mindset in designing PPE, companies can improve safety in the workplace, keep their employees, and have a positive impact on the culture of the organisation by treating the employees equally and giving them the respect they ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌deserve.

To help alleviate stress in their workforce as employers, organisations should provide an encouraging atmosphere that allows for open communication between employers and employees.

Open communication between the two creates an environment for employees to feel confident enough to express their opinions, share their ideas and work collaboratively to harness their views toward possible solutions.

Team-building activities can be offered to further enhance the social connection between coworkers through the development of meaningful relationships.

Any workplace should prioritise managing risk and developing control measures for forklift trucks for preventing accidents at the workplace.

When creating an effective safety program, employers should consider the operators' competencies, medical fitness, and adherence to established safety rules and regulations, along with the proper licensing, training, and knowledge of their surrounding area.

Through utilising a systematic approach that includes inspections, and repetitive training, along with continued monitoring systems, employers can provide employees with the tools to perform their jobs safely, while also maintaining the highest levels of operational efficiencies.

Recent inspections by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) outlined notable weaknesses in workplace hearing protection with significant deficiencies in training, storage, and awareness.

The training indicated that more than three-quarters of employees did not understand how to correctly wear and report hearing protection, and two-thirds did not know when it should be worn when exposed to noise.

Further, training on the effective use of hearing protection was notably absent, with 80 per cent having received no instruction on wearing the protection correctly.

A major change is happening in clothes for safety in the workplace, where the standard will be personal protective equipment (PPE) for women, which is made to fit properly.

The campaign by Robinson has brought forward the launch of a British Standard, which stresses that every worker should receive PPE that fits them, rather than the norm of design, which has historically been based on 'average man' sizes.

With research indicating that 46% of British women say they have received ill-fitting PPE, this will make a significant difference to safety and comfort across disciplines such as construction, healthcare and policing, with the reality that women also work on site.
