Solving Operation Enigma with Cyber Girls First 👩‍💻

Yesterday, the team were out at the offices, meeting the next generation of tech talent. We took part in the Cyber Girls First outreach day, delivering our Operation Enigma workshop and sharing our experience of working at a digital agency to over 40 brilliant young female students.

Through a mix of real-world industry insights and hands-on problem solving, , and Emma introduced the group to life at Enigma, from building bespoke software solutions to tackling complex challenges for clients across multiple sectors.

The highlight of the session? Our interactive codebreaking challenge, inspired by the history of Bletchley Park! Students stepped into the shoes of wartime cryptographers to decipher messages and work collaboratively under pressure.

We also shared the often-overlooked story of the 7,500 women who worked at Bletchley Park, reinforcing the important role women have always played - and continue to play - in technology.

There was so much curiosity and enthusiasm in the room! We love getting involved in opportunities like this to help young people, and especially girls, to see themselves in tech careers and understand the paths available right now.

Yesterday Steve and from were out and about, visiting the team at !

Tradepads have worked with us since 2020 to develop their web-to-print platform and rebuild their site from the ground up.

We had a tour around the factory, with a behind-the-scenes look at Tradepads' operations, and we were even introduced to a key member of staff, Hope!

Great to catch up in person and discuss the exciting developments coming to Tradepads over the next few months.

How are books published, and what tech is involved? We found out at our May Tech Talk at ! 📚

This month, delivered an inspiring Tech Talk at Enigma Interactive, sharing the story of how she published her book, ‘Seven: Distracted Detective’ and the technology that made it possible.

Rachel broke the process of publishing into seven clear, practical stages, showing the tools and technologies that supported every step:

1.  Writing the manuscript: Rachel did her initial drafts by hand (!), but has since digitised this process using digital notebooks and smart pens
2.  Winning an award – she used early recognition to build credibility, winning the Hachette Children’s Novel Award!
3.  Securing a grant from Arts Council England through their application portal, and using the funding to support digital development
4.  Deciding how to publish: Rachel weighed up traditional, independent and self‑publishing routes, before deciding to set up her own imprint
5.  Creating the book: working with her illustrator and designer, typesetting the novel herself, and creating ISBN data
6.  Printing and distribution: Rachel navigated printers, distributors and logistics
7.  Publishing and launch – bringing everything together with websites, design tools, marketing platforms and launch collateral!

What stood out was the range of technologies Rachel used and the choices she made – from creative software to platforms for domains, websites, design and promotion – showing us that publishing a book today is as much of a digital project as it is a creative one.

We welcomed a group of students to for a studio visit this week – thanks for visiting us!

The session began at our Newcastle quayside studios with an overview of Enigma - who we are, how we collaborate as a team, the clients we work with and some recent project highlights. From there, the students stepped into hands-on activities designed to reflect the work we do as an agency.

They were set two practical challenges offering insight into different roles across the business. The first focused on UX, with students exploring how to translate desktop wireframes into mobile experiences. The second task introduced a more technical perspective, as the students were given a Python-based, data validation programming challenge, where they learned about validation rules.

The visit concluded with a tour of the studio and informal conversations with members of the Enigma team, giving the students the chance to learn more about different career paths within digital. And our Director’s son was one of the students who attended – following in the family footsteps!

It was a pleasure meeting such a motivated and curious group of aspiring digital professionals. And well done to and who led the visit.

Our April Tech Talk at explored the world of natural computing 🖥️ 🌱

Earlier this month, we had a fascinating Tech Talk from , who asked some big (and slightly unsettling!) questions:

Can computing be natural? Can nature be computational? And if so… what are the implications?

Matt gave us an overview of natural computing - where computer science meets biology and nature. Drawing on his studies at Newcastle University, he explored areas such as:

🧠 Bio‑inspired computing: From artificial neurons and neural networks to evolutionary algorithms and cellular automata. Matt showed us his experiments using genetic algorithms to recreate artwork using polygons, and highlighted real-world applications in logistics, computer vision and game development.

🧬 Biological computing: We got microscopic as Matt told us about DNA computing, ‘wetware’, and even experiments using human brain tissue to learn games like Pong and Doom. Matt did his dissertation on DNA neural networks – and while this is a challenging area, there are some exciting potential applications for biological computing in cancer research and smart drug delivery.

🤖 Artificial life: We heard about modelling organic systems to understand nature, before moving onto new developments in robotics. And then we looked at ideas around brain emulation, and got a bit philosophical – if we get to the point where a simulated brain emulation can act like a natural organism, will we all live in a simulation?

Matt closed by focusing on the ethics of all of this – should humanity be playing god? And there are other considerations around testing on nature, consciousness, regulation and whether machines can suffer.

This was a mind‑bending session and a great reminder that today’s blue sky ideas might shape tomorrow’s technology. Thanks Matt!
