A huge thank you to Harlon Haveland for making time on set to share two recent projects and the thinking behind how he used the Robe iForteLTX to create natural-looking light in very different environments.
As Harlon puts it:
"You wouldn’t know you were in a studio with artificial lighting, it’s so subtle and beautiful."
In this video, Harlon explains how he used moving lights to create convincing sunlight in the studio and moonlight on location, while showing how he approached two very different lighting challenges.
☀️ Project 1: Sunlight in the studio
Working on an apartment set, Harlon used iForteLTX fixtures mounted outside seven windows to create natural, shifting daylight. The position, quality and colour of the light could be adjusted quickly, making it easy to move between different daylight looks at the touch of a button.
🌙 Project 2: Moonlight on location
Filming on a secluded beach in the Algarve, Harlon used two iForteLTX fixtures to create a natural moonlight effect. One fixture provided a broad wash of moonlight across the beach, while the second illuminated the cliff face behind, helping to create a more believable and natural scene.
As Harlon explains, this is something that traditionally wasn't possible with moving lights.
The iForteLTX combines long-throw performance with fully tuneable white light from 2,700K to 10,000K, green/magenta adjustment, accurate colour fidelity and full motion control, giving filmmakers not only another creative option when shaping naturalistic light but the ability to do it instantly
Watch the video to hear Harlon talk through both projects and see the results for yourself.
And if you'd like to see the iForteLTX in action, get in touch and we will be happy to arrange a demo with Andrew Woodfin.
Thanks again to Harlon for sharing his work and giving us a glimpse into his process.
