It's been a very long time coming, but I've finally gotten down to writing my very first childrens book!

I've had this book idea in my head for at least 25 years! 🤦‍♂️ But now I've finally put it down on paper, and am currently in the middle of illustrating it! 😁

So look out for more of my brand new childrens book, coming soon, but for now, here's a llttle first look illustration!

Well just like that, the summer is done! 🍁

The time for holidays and rest is over, the kids are back to school, and it’s back to the office and the daily grind for most people.

The Autumn months are often particularly busy as expo season comes around, followed by the Christmas rush to get everything done before the end of the year.

There’s always a lot of frantic buzzing around, as though there’s not enough time.

But there is, there’s more than enough time to get it all done.

Following on from my post on Monday about the artists pallet.

This was the painting I was working on with that pallet.

It’s an acrylic painting on a wedge of cut
tree trunk I found on one of my foraging sessions. You can still make out the cut lines across the surface.

I’ve painted on all kinds of surfaces, from walls, the sides of trains, trainers, clothing, canvas, glass windows, concrete, metal shutters, huge pvc sheets for bouncy castles, and everything in between.

Each surface teaches a new lesson.
None are alike. Each material has to be worked with differently if it is to hold the paint.

A different process, different preparation, different thinking.

A big part of design is exactly about this!

It’s not just about coming up with beautiful graphics or artwork, I always think about the place the design will be seen. Where will it be displayed? What surface will it be printed on? If it’s digital, what size screens will it need to work on?

All of this has to be factored in to the process before any designs are created.

Designs for print use an entirely different colour format and process, than designing for screens. If you get the two confused, the colours print out all wrong and the design doesn’t do its job.

If you’re getting AI to knock something up, instead of working with a designer, none of this is taken into account.

Designers are meticulous, we problem solve, we don’t just paint pretty pictures! 😏

A weekend well spent! 🎨 🖌️

No this isn't some weird modern art, but it's what my paint pallet looks like after a weekend spent painting!

In fine art, the artist's pallet is often considered to be a "painting before the painting".

The pallet is where the ideas form, and where the thoughts start to lay the foundations for the artwork to come. The mixing of paint isn't random. It's intentional. each colour carefully chosen, mixed and blended to get the required look on the artwork being created.

With a little training, it's possible to read the paint pallet of an artists and figure out exactly what they were feeling and thinking at the time they were creating their art. You can gauge artistic habits, personality, how the artist sees the world and what they felt.

My pallet represents my accumulated experience, built up over decades.

As I was mixing paint on my pallet, it dawned on me that how I mix paint, directly correalates to how I approach design work too!

When I'm coming up with a colour pallet for a design, I'm not looking at just the colours themselves, but also what they mean. I'm looking at how those colours will help a business tell their story. When I'm crafting a design, I'm helping the client find their own "pallet".

I'm helping them bring a visual form to all of their experience, all of their expertise, values and beliefs.

We often spend so much time focusing on the finsihed out outcome, the "pretty picture" that we forget to stop and look at how we got there in the first place. Without the process, none of it would exist at all!

Your business already has all the ingredients, all the "colours".

I just help you blend them and lay them onto the "canvas" of your business in a meaningful way.

The Logomark.

A logomark is described as "a visual icon, symbol, or graphic design that represents a brand without using text or the company name".

In graphic design, logomarks provide a powerful way to say a lot about a business without even saying the business name, or without any textual context.

One of the things I love about logomarks, is that you can hide deep symbolism, company values or beliefs in plain sight within the mark itself.

Once you know how to read it, it can tell you a lot about the business the logo is for.

Real Art, real skill, no prompts!
"The Return of the Light" - Acrylics on canvas

AI doesn't create anything. It can't.

It can only every churn out rehashed and jumbled up stuff, using bits and pieces of things that already exist. Works that a human being already created at some earlier point in time. Every single bit of AI generated content, is stolen from someone else.

Creating real art takes time, effort, emotion, movement, an understanding of technique, of colour, of form and of composition.

I painted this piece on the spur of the moment.
No grand plan, no sketching.

Just me, in a state of flow, paint, canvas and brushes, alone with my thoughts. This is on the wall in our living room.

When the sun comes up in the morning, the light shines through the window, falls onto this painting, and the gold flecks of paint I used in this, glisten and dance, as though the whole painting is waking up. It shimmers in the morning light. You can see the brushstrokes, you can feel the texture of the paint, and it makes you feel.

And that is the difference between AI and real art!

"I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream" - Vincent Van Gogh.

Last night Claire Scott Digital Marketing treated me to a very early birthday present! 😁

We went to the "Beyond Van Gogh" exhibition at Nottingham's Motorpoint Arena Nottingham & National Ice Centre

I've seen many pieces of Van Gogh's work up close, they're all stunning!

But this immersive experience was a great way of combining his visuals with some great tech and beautiful music, to create a really memorable experience. It really was mesmerising and pretty moving even at times.

What was very apparent in seeing a lot of his work, all in the same space and at the same time like this, is how I felt like a witness to the gradual decline of Vincent's mental health through his work. You can see it in his subjects and the way his style shifts.

I often talk about how when we create art, we leave a piece of our soul, our subconscious and our emotional state within each piece. Art isn't about pretty things, it's about sharing a piece of our soul with the veiwer, and allowing it the space to speak.AI can't do this.

This is why human creativity is so important.

As spiderman's uncle Ben says "with great power comes great responsibility".

Thank you Claire. It was a beautiful experience, and I'm glad I got to experience it with you. 🥰
