It would appear that even telephone scammers are too busy to call themselves now-days and are using automated telephone messages to draw people in.

The latest (we just received ourselves) claims to be from the internet provider telling me that I have all sorts of dangerous spyware on my computer, my service had been compromised and I could lose my internet connection.

Now obviously as I run an IT company my systems are clean, but someone who is vulnerable or not really computer savvy might get worried by this. The actually message does sound somewhat frightening and relies on you to panic and respond.

When you're answering a cold call always be sceptical and you won’t go far wrong.

Don’t respond to cold calls - just put the phone down.
If the company that wants to speak to you is legitimate, they will either email or write to you.

Don’t assume the phone call has automatically been disconnected when you put the phone down - wait a few minutes before using it again.

Lots of my customers are getting emails showing usernames and passwords and claiming they have been "Hacked"
Basically ignore the blackmail attempt but do change your passwords as soon as possible.
The reason this is happening is that lots of large sites such as Facebook and Linkedin have had major data breaches over the last few years.
If you want to find out if your data has been compromised go to https://haveibeenpwned.com and enter your email address.
If you are still worried, contact me.

Have I Been Pwned allows you to search across multiple data breaches to see if your email address has been compromised.

A note on Passwords

Very few passwords are actually secure and given time and determination a good hacker will break just about any password in anything from a few second to a week or so.

However, unless you are a major celebrity, world leader, or multi-millionaire, expert hackers are not really that interested in hacking your accounts.

However, most people still leave themselves open to potential trouble by reusing passwords again and again and choosing simple to guess passwords.

But we all have tens or hundreds of passwords so how can you use a secure "ish" password for each site and still remember them later.

One way to improve your current security is to choose 4 or 5 random words such as:

booklet - orvile - innovate - ashtray - banana

When you need a password just choose two of the words say orvile and booklet and add two or three numbers like 295 and a special character like ^ giving you a password of orvilebooklet295^. You can also use capital letters to further improve security, so the password ends up looking like Orvilebooklet295^.

You can write this down to remember it as o_b_295^ or O_b_295^.

NEVER write the actual words down, just the first letter and an underscore, followed by the number and special character.

NEVER write down your username (which is generally your password anyway)

Although not 100% secure, this method will at least give you better security than just using the same password all the time and you can write it down. It’s easy to remember your special 5 words and it’s much better than keep using "Pa55word" all the time.

A lot of customers are starting to get emails claiming that their account has been compromised and even showing a password that is similar to one of the ones they use.
I suggest that you ignore the message but change your passwords as a precaution anyway.
It appears some this information has been gathered due to data breaches at Facebook erg.
Don't panic and if you need further reassurance or a health check please contact me.
