Recently a customer came to me with an Acer All-in-one PC that was bought just 4 years ago, and the customer knew that there was something wrong with it. It ran terribly slow and was essentially useless and unusable.
Diagnosing the issue was fairly simple. I went to task manager and saw that the hard drive was at 100% usage constantly. Immediately I knew that this was very likely the issue.
After consulting with the customer we decided that the best option was to upgrade the HDD.
This was a very delicate process as unfortunately companies are greedy and specifically design products to be difficult to take apart so that you don't go to a third party company to repair the product, and you send it back to them so that they can charge you ridiculous prices. After plenty of research, I knew where each clip holding the back plate covering the internals was. It was a delicate process as some of these clips were next to a ribbon cable connecting the display to the motherboard. I was patient and delicate with the machine, making sure to put padding under the display and making sure to know where each component was beforehand. The upgrade was successful with no scratches or dents on the machine.
We switched from a HDD to a Crucial BX500 SSD. The performance boost was immense. The boot time after being upgraded was just under 12 seconds, it now runs applications smoothly and transfers files super fast.
After testing the performance, I decided to reinstall Windows to clear out the clutter that time brings. (obviously with the customers permission, and I ensured there were no files on the machine.)
For reference, the SSD we replaced the HDD with only cost £20. This was well worth the cost.
If you're reading this please understand that your old PC that is running slow may still have years of use left in it.
