The overall vacancy number is down. But that doesn't tell the whole story.

Tech hiring is growing. 37% of UK businesses are planning to expand their IT and technology teams this year. Engineering firms are struggling to fill roles, with 76% reporting difficulty recruiting for key technical positions. And construction is facing one of its most acute skills shortages in decades, despite a softer market overall.

The agencies that are busiest right now aren't the generalists waiting for the market to pick up. They're the specialists who know exactly where demand is sitting, and have the pipeline to move on it quickly.

The recruiters getting results from AI in 2026 tend to have one thing in common. They're not the ones who've automated the most. They're the ones who've been most deliberate about what they haven't automated.

Client calls. Offer conversations. The moment you push back on a brief because you know the salary won't land. These things don't get better with AI involved.

Use technology for the admin, the scheduling, the first pass on applications. Handle everything else yourself. It's not a complicated strategy, but it's the one that's actually working.

Only 26% of candidates trust AI to evaluate them fairly. That stat says a lot.

For all the noise around automation and efficiency, most candidates still want to feel like a person looked at their application. That a human made the call. That there was some judgement involved, not just an algorithm.

Which is actually good news for recruiters. Because that gap, between what AI can do and what candidates still want, is where your value sits. The agencies that understand that are using AI to handle the transactional work, and putting their people front and centre everywhere else.

The human edge in recruitment has never mattered more.

A recruiter told us recently that they'd tried three different AI tools in the last year. Each one promised to save them hours. None of them fixed the thing that was actually slowing them down, their candidate data was a mess.

AI doesn't tidy up your database. It takes whatever you've already got and moves faster with it. If what you've got isn't in great shape, faster just means you find out sooner.

Before the next tool purchase, it's worth asking: is what we already have actually being used well?

The answer is usually more valuable than any new feature.
