We hear the term ‘copy-editing’ bandied about a fair bit in the publishing industry (sometimes interchangeably with ‘proofreading’), but what does it actually mean?
Copy-editing is a step distinct from developmental editing, where content is evaluated and organised, and from proofreading, where text that has been set out in its final layout is checked for errors. Instead, copy-editing calls for reading a text thoroughly and proposing changes for consistency, clarity and correctness – taking what’s written and refining it into its best version.
