Most people think branding starts with a logo.
For me, branding starts with direction.
Before I design anything visually, I help clients map out their brand using what I call the Brand Compass.
Because a strong brand should know:
• where it’s going
• what it stands for
• who it’s speaking to
• how it wants to be seen
Here’s how it works:
↑ NORTH — VISION
Where is the brand trying to go?
What are we building toward?
What future are we creating?
↓ SOUTH — VALUES
What grounds the brand?
What does it stand for?
What makes it authentic?
→ EAST — AUDIENCE
Who is this really for?
What do they care about?
What culture and lifestyle do they connect with?
← WEST — PERCEPTION
How should the brand feel?
What should people instantly understand when they experience it?
At the centre of all of this is identity.
Because the strongest brands aren’t built from trends.
They’re built from alignment.
This is why I believe most branding problems are not design problems.
They’re clarity problems.
And once the direction becomes clear, the visuals become far more powerful.
