Its that time of year again where social media is flooded with apparent "Bargain Budget PCs" however we have seen a sharp uplift in customers contacting us regarding upgrades or failures of these machines not knowing what they actually were sold was repurposed, second user equipment wrapped up in a spangly RGB case. Because of this we have wrote the following to alert people who maybe buying a PC for the first time, or for people who need a bit of assistance and guidance to some of the pitfalls of these systems.

Budget PC builders frequently use second-hand or refurbished components like graphics cards, CPUs, or motherboards. While these parts may still be functional, they can be a gamble in terms of longevity and performance. The issue arises because second-hand hardware often could be subject to wear and tear, leading to failures not long down the line. We have seen PCs with Core i7 CPUs from the 2nd and 3rd generation released back in 2012 in some of these systems, cloaked behind the moniker of "Intel Core i7" CPU without fully disclosing the actual full model number. Please remember that wording like Core i7 spans 14 generations and its the generation that is the important factor.

Some sellers may cloak the true specifications by using older models or hardware that's been refurbished without fully disclosing its age or wear. For instance, a used graphics card might be presented as a high-performance model, but its actual capabilities could be degraded due to excessive usage. This can result in a less-than-optimal experience when the system struggles to handle more demanding tasks or modern games.

Although newer components typically cost a bit more than second-hand options, the difference in price is often minimal when compared to the long-term benefits. Newer hardware benefits from the latest technological advancements, including improved performance, better energy efficiency, and greater support for future software updates.

While the upfront cost of newer components might seem higher, they often provide better value in the long run. With second-hand parts, you might save a little initially, but you risk dealing with obsolete or failing components that could cost more to replace over time and require upgrading far sooner than expected.

If you are ever in doubt over a system you have seen online, we will be happy to advise on the feasibility and quality of the system in terms of performance to cost, free of charge, before you purchase. We understand there are some great deals in the second user PC components space, this is solely to inform users who are thinking they are getting a bargain new PC that often that may not be the case, So if in doubt please do not hesitate to contact us and we will be happy to help.
