A little demonstration of seamless Wi-Fi roaming. Demonstrated using the Ubiquiti 'WiFiman' app and several Unifi AP's.

With multiple access points and properly configured roaming features (802.11r, 802.11k and 802.11v), you can achieve fast, seamless handovers between access points for true wall-to-wall Wi-Fi coverage.

Perfect for Wi-Fi calls when you're constantly on the move—without those annoying dropouts as you walk around your home or business.

At the start of last week, we installed our first Starlink Mini X, and overall I came away impressed.

With Starlink recently refreshing its product range, the Mini X is now the dish supplied with the basic 100 Mbps package. From an aesthetic point of view, it's a fantastic piece of kit. The compact design looks smart and unobtrusive, making it far more appealing than previous generations of satellite equipment.

However, there were a couple of aspects that I found disappointing from an installation perspective.

Firstly, the requirement for the fixed 15-metre power cable significantly limits where the dish can be positioned. It can also be challenging to route and conceal the cable neatly, making it harder to achieve a discreet and professional-looking installation.

Secondly, I was disappointed that Starlink still doesn't offer a standardised connection method that would allow installers to use their own Ethernet cabling directly to the dish. Instead, customers are required to purchase Starlink's proprietary Ethernet solution. Aside from being an unattractive colour, it again introduces limitations around cable lengths and flexibility, particularly when integrating with third-party routers and mesh Wi-Fi systems.

Those frustrations aside, the performance was excellent. The system delivered exactly the speeds Starlink promises, and the setup process was straightforward. Starlink continues to be a game-changing solution for many of our rural customers, providing reliable high-speed connectivity where traditional broadband options simply aren't available.

This isn't a criticism of Starlink as a service—I think the technology is remarkable and has transformed internet access for countless people. I simply wish Starlink would address a few practical installation issues to make the hardware easier to deploy as a permanent, professional solution.

Yet another Unifi router and Wi-Fi install.

This client's existing BT router and Wi-Fi access point was in the back of a wardrobe! No wonder the Wi-Fi wasn't great. The router and the existing cabling couldn't be moved but we installed 3 access points in open space. This has improved the Wi-Fi, massively.

Along with the Wi-Fi improvements, we also removed an old 'Fast Ethernet' switch. This device was acting as a big bottleneck not exploiting the full potential of the 1Gbps incoming fibre.

It's amazing the setups that you find out there.

The biggest buzz for the client, post installation, was being able use all of his Sonos speakers in all rooms, in sync 💪. Sounded awesome.

Ceiling mounted AP. Central in the house in open space.

Kitchen AP

Sonos 'Move'. Sounded incredible.

Some more photos from the Bretforton Theatre Barn. We showed some photos a couple of weeks back where we did some cabling, and fibre splicing, to link 2 switches that we over 100m apart.

The photos in this post show the Wi-Fi access points that we are slowly installing throughout the theatre to provide greater Wi-Fi coverage across the large - and very interesting - building. Wi-Fi and networking weapon of choice was Unifi by Ubiquiti.

Prior to getting involved with this project, the client had multiple different broadband connections to provide connectivity in different parts of the building. This was not only costly but, created multiple different networks isolated from one another. Via our sister company, Orbicomm, we provided a single - full fibre - internet connection. We then disrupted this single connection to the key areas. This will not only lower costs but also create a single network and thus a far better connectivity experience when moving through the building.

A couple of Unifi POE floodlights installed for a client who we had previously installed Unifi CCTV for.

These 2 floodlights are programmed so that, if it is nighttime and someone walks within the area observed by the camera on the driveway, the floodlights will illuminate.

The AI on the G6 turrets is so accurate that I have no issue with connecting the cameras with lighting and sirens. I'd be reluctant if there was the odd false alarm but false alarms seem to be non existent with the Unifi cameras👌

This was a particularly satisfying installation from last week. The client had a 500Mbps fibre line coming into the property, but the existing Wi-Fi setup was heavily bottlenecking the speed. They were relying on an older mesh system, a standard internet service provider router tucked away inside a utility cupboard, and several powerline adapters to try and extend the signal. This layout was causing severe coverage drops and poor overall performance.

The old equipment was entirely removed and replaced with a UniFi system, utilising four dedicated access points. The standard provider router was also swapped out for a UniFi console to manage the entire network efficiently.

The result is complete wall-to-wall coverage that fully supports the 500Mbps incoming fibre speed. Devices now transition seamlessly between access points without any dropouts or performance loss.

Another, multiple, Unifi G6 turret install completed.

We are still loving the AI capabilities of these cameras. Searching for events is SO easy. Number plate and facial recognition as standard. We also love how easy the solution is to integrate with other systems👌.

As an installer, remote assistance is incredibly easy, too. Remote assistance with the likes of Dahua and Hik can be a bit of a pain unless you pay for the commercial software and licences.

Cabling this install, discreetly, was a bit of a challenge. A very old property with stone walls and none of the classic, easy, cabling routes.

Some photos of some recent fibre works at a theatre in, Bretforton, Worcestershire.

We had to break out the fibre kit, as the link that was required, between router and switch (ultimate goal WiFi in the bar), was greater than 100m. At the same time it would have been rude not to have maximised the port speeds of the Unifi equipment. The link speed was 10Gbps💪

Lots more to come at this site as they slowly roll out WiFi across the whole site .

We've just finished up a Unifi Protect installation at a stunning property in Worcestershire, and this time we decided to incorporate the Unifi Siren into the setup. It is the first time we have used this particular bit of kit, but we'll definitely be pushing it for all our future Protect installs. The volume is absolutely mental for such a compact unit, providing a serious punch that you wouldn't expect from its size.

What really impressed us was how easily we could integrate the siren with the existing cameras using the Protect suite. We've set it up so that if anyone wanders into specific motion zones during set hours, the siren triggers automatically. Having that kind of audible deterrent makes a massive difference to the overall security of a home, as it lets any intruders know immediately that they've been spotted.

The versatility of the unit is another big win for us, especially since it's powered over Ethernet. Being PoE means we don't have to worry about separate power runs, and the waterproof design feels really robust, so we're confident it'll handle the British weather without any bother. It's a fantastic addition to the Ubiquiti range and adds a whole new layer of protection for our clients.
