There was a time, not toooo many years ago, when words really were made from individual pieces of type - carefully selected for their typographical purpose, arranged and locked into place before they could make their mark on paper via letterpress printing, machinery we still use today but mainly for die cutting and creasing, as printing has come a very long way since then!

But something that hasn’t changed…
We still love working with businesses who ARE just our type 😍

Huge thanks to Sew Simple Workwear Ltd for creating a post about stickers! Vicky loved the stickers that we use on our products, particularly the element about reused packaging, and wanted a similar sticker for her own business. And here we are!

As a team who are passionate about print this research was bound to grab our attention but not just because it's about our industry but because it's about helping to shape the future.

This new study has found that students understand and retain information better when reading from paper rather than screens, with the greatest benefits seen in students who already struggle with reading.

We can extol the virtues of high print quality, equipment and turnaround times but it won't beat the words of our customers. This screenshot is of a recent LinkedIn post that one of our customers made and it speaks far louder about what we're really about at Ellison Printing.

This customer worked with us years ago and remembered not just the finished products, but the experience of working with us. When she recently needed help with a couple of personal projects, she reached out to us again.

Tell us you work in print without telling us you work in print… 👀

This is genuinely real-life stuff... we really do live like this 🙈

📏 You notice if something is a millimetre out of line.
📖 You instinctively flick through a brochure to see how it's bound.
🎨 You compare colours on packaging and wonder if they match the brand guidelines.
📄 You can't help feeling the weight and texture of paper before reading what's printed on it.
👀 You spot a typo before you've even finished the first sentence.
🤓 And yes… you've definitely admired a restaurant menu for its paper stock or it's standard of design - ask Jane about this sometime!

We're certain we're not the only ones guilty of this!

A little insight into what happens here at Ellison Printing...

Not all of our customers need help with design. Some send us artwork that their in-house team has created, some send artwork they've created themselves whilst others ask us to design it for them using our in-house studio.

Whichever route they choose, we like to give everything a quick glance before it goes to print as when you've read the same thing over and over again, it's easy to miss the obvious. Sometimes all it takes is a fresh pair of eyes looking over it.

Thankfully, most things are spotted before printing. Although we do remember a customer a number of years ago who, unbeknown to us, had changed their business name. Numerous staff members checked the proof numerous times, but it wasn't until after we had delivered the order that they realised they hadn't updated the name.

We have a bit of a love-hate relationship with proofreading. The brain is clever… it often sees what it expects to see rather than what’s actually there.
