September is busier than we thought, in the best way.

On Thursday 17 September, I'm at The Harpenden Collective running a workshop on personal branding on LinkedIn. Not how to go viral, not a content formula. Just how to show up online as yourself, in a way that's honest and clear and actually brings the right people to you. Members come free, non-members £25+VAT. Find out more: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-power-of-personal-branding-on-linkedin-tickets-1996623982078

And on 23 September I'm at Stanta in St Albans for a free brand-building workshop. That one's about the business brand, whether it reflects where you actually are now, who you're for, and what you stand for going into Q4. Most businesses describe what they DO, not what they deliver.

create live experiences that elevate events. They are pretty fantastic at it too.

But their brand said "lighting and audio"; they had a one-page website, no story, and no proof of their amazing work. Marketing was reactive too.

When we started working together, we started by getting crystal clear on who they serve and what they actually deliver. We then built everything from there: brand positioning, a new website, case studies, a digital strategy, and paid campaigns.

One year later, the team are fully aligned, marketing is measurable, enquiries are up, and they've been shortlisted for awards.

Now THAT is what brand clarity does.

If you’re senior within your business, people aren’t just looking at what your company does. They’re looking at you.

They're paying attention to how you talk, what you share, what you know, and what you stand for.

Ultimately, whether you're someone they’d want to work with.

That personal presence can either reinforce your business brand or cause a disconnection.

That’s what I’ll be exploring in my upcoming workshop with The Harpenden Collective: The Power of Personal Branding on LinkedIn.

This is not about corporate mouthpieces, cringe-worthy humble brags, or pretending to be an influencer.

This is about practical ways to show up as yourself, build trust and make your personal brand work harder for the business you’re building.

Think about two businesses offering exactly the same thing...

You call the first one and are kept on hold. The conversation is short, but you get what you called for.

You call the second. They take time with your enquiry, are friendly, and feel like they actually know what they're doing.

Same service. Same price point. Same market.

But a completely different feeling and experience.

That feeling that forms before you've consciously decided to trust someone is what a brand actually is. It's not necessarily the logos or the colours. It's the messaging and tone.

Which means when something isn't working, like getting the wrong enquiries, losing pitches, or having a website that gets no enquiries, it's an issue with the brand (not the logo or the marketing or sales team)!

What one word do you want your customers to feel about your business before they get in touch?

What happens when your personal brand is bigger than your business brand, and you need the business to grow without you?

That was the real challenge for Dr Naomi Potter, founder of Menopause Care. Half a million personal followers, a rapidly expanding clinic network, and a brand that needed to stand on its own, without Naomi having to be the face of every room.

Most businesses face the opposite version of this problem. The founder is invisible, and the brand is doing all the work alone. Either way, the result is the same: the brand isn't carrying what the business needs it to carry.

Since the rebrand, the clinic has expanded to nine clinic locations from one, built a 4.8-star TrustScore, received two national awards, and grown a 200,000+ community.

This is the power of brand when the foundations are right.

We have some exciting news to end the month 🥳

We've been named a finalist in three categories at the SME Hertfordshire Business Awards 2026:

🏆 Best Enterprising New Business
🏆 Business Woman of the Year for our Founder and Creative Director, Anna Peck
🏆 Service Excellence

Being recognised across three categories —for the business itself, for the quality of what we deliver, and for Anna personally—means a great deal.

Midnight Blue was built on the belief that great branding changes how businesses are seen, and how they see themselves.

To have that work acknowledged in Hertfordshire, where we're rooted, matters a lot to us.

Huge congratulations to all the other finalists. We'll see you in September!

A brand isn't finished when the logo is approved. It's finished when it's on the wall, on the merch, on the screen, in the hands of the right people, and it still looks like it belongs there.

This is what the process looks like from the first moodboard to the finished brand out in the world.

The thinking comes first.

The identity follows.

Then it goes everywhere it needs to go, and it has to hold up at every single touchpoint.

That's the brief and the process we work to every time.

Where would you love to see your brand once it's finished? On a car? On staff uniform? Let us know!

Midnight Blue has been named a finalist in the Watford & West Herts Chamber of Commerce (W3RT) atford Chamber Awards across three categories: Best Enterprising Business, Business Woman of the Year, and Service Excellence.

To even be mentioned once would have meant the world. To be recognised three times, in a year that has brought so much change for us, is something I do not take for granted.

None of this happens alone. It is the result of a lot of hard work, a lot of learning, and a lot of support from people who believed in what we are building.

What I am most looking forward to is the celebration itself. Getting to party with my lovely Watford Chamber friends is genuinely one of the highlights of the year. This community lifts each other up in a way that is rare, and I feel lucky to be part of it.

Congratulations to every single finalist. Watford is full of brilliant local businesses doing remarkable things, and it is a privilege to stand alongside you.

Here is to a great night ahead.

We say this to almost every client at some point in the brand identity process, usually when the conversation has drifted toward personal taste rather than the audience they're trying to reach...

"You are not decorating your living room."

The colours you love, the font that looks right to you, and the vibe you've always imagined do not matter if it doesn't speak to the people you're trying to attract.

Brand identity isn't a self-expression exercise.

It's a business decision.

The visual identity exists to make the right people feel something... recognition, trust, curiosity... before a single word is read.

If you find yourself saying "I just don't love it" about creative work a good designer has produced from a proper brief, the question worth asking is: are you responding to what your audience needs, or what you personally prefer?

They're not always the same thing.

6 years of Midnight Blue and this one feels a little bittersweet, if I’m honest 💙

Every single year, Michelle and I have celebrated this milestone together. A day at the spa, far too much rosé, a proper day out putting the world to rights. It’s just not the same doing it on my own this year.

Although, we did still see each other on the anniversary. Michelle Michelle Stacey gave me a sports massage this time round. How life has changed. I love that we still found a way to celebrate together.

Six years in, I’ve made a lot of mistakes, learned an absolute mountain of lessons, and somehow built a business that’s genuinely resilient. One that makes me really, really satisfied.

A few of the big things these years have taught me:

1️⃣ Invest in a good accountant, but still understand your own numbers. Don’t hand your brain over with your books.

2️⃣ Feast and famine is completely normal. Try to actually enjoy the quiet times instead of panicking through them.

3️⃣ A day’s work is never truly done. You’re chipping away, not building a house in a day.

4️⃣ Network for the relationship, not the sale. The rest follows.

5️⃣ Collaboration over competition, every single day.

6️⃣ Roll with the changes. Nothing stays still for long.

7️⃣ Be nice to your clients. Genuinely. It matters more than anything.

Here’s to the mistakes, the lessons, the quiet weeks and the mad ones.

Here’s to the people who’ve cheered me on along the way.

Here’s to year seven! 🎈
