One of the questions I hear more often is: "Can I trust AI to tell me whether something is a scam?" 🤔

Until recently, I'd have been cautious with that.

AI is brilliant at explaining things, but when it comes to cyber security, being almost right isn't good enough.

That's why I think this latest development is interesting.

Norton has integrated its Genie scam detection tool into both Claude and ChatGPT.

It means people can ask an AI assistant to help assess whether an email, text message, website or online offer looks suspicious 👀

The AI isn't giving its own opinion, it’s drawing on Norton's scam detection technology, which looks for things like impersonation, pressure tactics, suspicious links, and requests for sensitive information.

It's combining the conversational side of AI with technology that's specifically designed to identify scams 🔎

But I don't think people should stop thinking for themselves.

If an email claims your bank account is about to be closed or a supplier suddenly wants you to change their payment details, you should still check independently.

Tools like this could become useful as a second opinion though.

Online scams are becoming much harder to spot than they were a few years ago.

Criminals are using AI to write more convincing emails, create more believable websites, and remove the spelling mistakes that used to give them away 🤖

Anything that helps people pause and sense-check what they're looking at must be a positive step.

I can also see this becoming part of everyday working life.

Instead of forwarding a suspicious email to a colleague and asking, "Does this look right to you?", people may increasingly ask an AI assistant first.

It should never replace security awareness or good internal processes.

But it could help you make better decisions before you click a link or reply to a message.

Most people install Windows updates without thinking twice.

And to be fair, that’s a good habit. Updates are meant to keep you secure.
The problem is attackers know this, and they’re getting much better at copying the things people already trust.

Right now, there’s a fake Windows 11 “update” doing the rounds that looks almost identical to the real thing. Same style, same language, same “official” feel.

But if someone clicks download, they’re not installing an update.

They’re installing malware.

What makes this one nasty is it doesn’t look like a typical scam. It can be packaged to appear legitimate, which means people click quickly and carry on with their day, and the damage is already done.

A simple rule for your team:

* Run updates only through Windows Settings
* If anything pops up unexpectedly asking for an “update”, pause and check
* If you ever need something manually, go directly to Microsoft, not via a link

This is one of those stories that shows why “I’ll update it later” can be a risky plan 😬

A critical vulnerability has been found in a popular WordPress plugin called Advanced Custom Fields: Extended, putting around 50,000 websites at risk of full takeover.

The issue could allow someone who is not logged in to create a new user account and give themselves administrator access.

And on a WordPress site, admin access means everything — content, users, plugins, themes and full control.

There is an important catch: this does not affect every site automatically.

For the flaw to be exploited, a site must be using specific user creation or update forms with role mapping enabled.

Even so, the severity rating is 9.8 out of 10, which shows how serious the risk could be under the right conditions.

The good news is that a fix is already available.

The bad news is that many sites still have not updated.

And once a vulnerability becomes public, attackers do not need it to be easy. They just need it to be possible.

When was the last time you checked whether the “set and forget” parts of your website were still being maintained?
