Tinker has found herself a new office bed.

Yes, it’s a cardboard box. But when you work in a print studio surrounded by boxes, it seems rather wasteful not to put one to good use!

From here she can keep an eye on what’s going on, spring into action when a visitor arrives and, most importantly, make sure she doesn’t miss anyone who might have treats.

In between all that, she’s quite happy to settle into her box and take things easy

I think she’s got the work/life balance about right!

We finally made it along to the Nova Art Guild exhibition at Langford Lakes yesterday — cutting it rather fine, as it was the very last day!

It was wonderful to see such a varied collection of work, including the fabulous photography of Scarlet Leatham and Art Of David Walker the vibrant landscape paintings of Tamsyn Gregory the beautiful bird and floral paintings of Lindsay Keir and Geraldine McLoughlin’s striking kiln-fired glass sculptures.

We enjoyed chatting with David and Geraldine before heading to the Kingfisher Café for the obligatory café treats, followed by a peaceful walk around the lakes.

And, rather fittingly, we even caught sight of a kingfisher in flight. A very lovely way to spend the afternoon.

This is where digital files become physical prints.

Our print room is one of the quieter corners of the studio — where carefully managed colour, beautiful papers and craftsmanship come together.

What leaves this room might be destined for an exhibition, a book, a gallery wall or someone’s home.

If you've ever heard someone mention a Pantone colour, this is what they're talking about.

A Pantone colour is a standardised reference, giving designers, printers and manufacturers a common language for colour.

Instead of saying "a bright red", they can specify one exact shade.

Whether it's printed in Salisbury or Sydney, everyone is aiming for the same colour.

It's one of the ways consistency is achieved across branding, packaging and print.

Not every exhibition hangs on a gallery wall.

When people think about exhibitions, it's easy to picture paintings and photographs.

But exhibitions take many forms.

This large-format display panel is one of several we've recently produced for a client exhibiting at a country fair. With more summer events still to come, the printer has certainly been keeping busy.

Whether it's a fine art print, an exhibition panel, a banner or display graphics, the aim is always the same.

To present information clearly, professionally and in a way that's a pleasure to look at.

Some printed work is designed to be admired.

Some is designed to inform.

Choosing the right paper.

The image may be the same.

The paper never is.

Smooth or textured.

Warm white or bright white.

Soft matt or gently textured.

Each paper changes the way a print feels in your hands and how the artwork is experienced.

Choosing a paper isn't about finding the 'best' one.

It's about finding the one that feels right for the work.

Long before a camera is switched on or a printer begins to work, most projects start with a conversation.

Sometimes we're talking about papers and finishes. Sometimes it's choosing book cloths, ribbons and presentation materials. Other times it's discussing colour, or simply listening to what a client is hoping to achieve.

These early conversations shape everything that follows.

Our office isn't really a reception area. It's a place where ideas are explored, samples are compared and plans begin to take shape.

It's one of the quieter parts of what we do, but it's often where the most important decisions are made.

Many of the best projects start around a table rather than a computer.

Every studio has one piece of equipment that makes first-time visitors stop and ask,

"What's that?"

This is ours.

When it's not in use, our large-format trimmer lives on the wall. It's designed for accurately trimming wide rolls and large printed pieces, from wallpaper and exhibition graphics to banners and other oversized projects.

Like many of the tools in the studio, it isn't used every day.

But when a larger job arrives, it's exactly the right tool for the task.

No two days in the studio are ever quite the same.

One day we're carefully handling a fine art print.

The next, we're working with wallpaper or exhibition graphics several metres long.

It's that variety that keeps the work interesting.

The studio may be a little quieter at weekends, but Bobbin's routine doesn't change.

Breakfast is expected, followed by a wander around the garden while we catch up on a few jobs and enjoy a slower start to the day.

I suspect one of the reasons Bobbin likes weekends so much is that there's simply more time to spend together.

It's a lovely way to slow the pace for a little while before another week begins.

Some routines are definitely worth keeping.
