The Principles of Varistor Selection

A varistor is an electronic component used to suppress transient voltages to protect electronic circuits. The behavior of varistors in a circuit is similar to TVS diodes, but they are entirely different in design, materials, and construction.

There are many kinds of varistors on the market suitable for various applications, making choosing the right one to protect a given circuit challenging.

This article look into the options available.

New AEC-Q200 High Inductance Power Inductors

ABC Taiwan | Atec Electronics have launched a new type of high-inductance shielded SMD power inductor product, MCU1277.

The new EV inductor meets the AEC-Q200 automotive standard.
MCU1277 series products are all fully automated production, so the internal structure design not only provides high-efficiency inductance solutions, but also strengthens the general traditional SMD structure design so that the inductance value of MCU1277 can reach up to 470 uH!

Compared to the general traditional chip, the strengthened structure means the MCU1277 series is perfectly designed into DC/DC converters, switching power supplies and filtering applications in automotive power conversion and related modules.

DMTL's Un-fore-gettable Night at TopGolf

The team at DMTL often arrange social events and have worked together to take on some challenging escape rooms, breathed in the sea air on group fishing trips, raced in a Go-Kart Grand Prix and many more group activities (usually with an element of competition...)

This week, the team decided to visit a local TopGolf venue to test out our golf skills!

DMTL - The Race Is On!

In previous years, the team at DMTL have worked together to take on some challenging escape rooms, breathed in the sea air on group fishing trips and many more group activities (usually with an element of competition...)

This year, the team decided to test their driving skills in a Grand Prix style Go-Kart race!

Qualifying...

The qualifying saw the drivers get to grips with the track and really start to improve their times ready for the race. Pete, who had raced on the track many, many times before, saw his track knowledge advantage reduce with every completed lap.

The qualifying results, that determined the grid order, were as follows:

1 - Pete
2 - Robert P
3 - Rob L
4 - Patrick
5 - Liam
6 - Ellie
7 - Karen
8 - Eliot
9 - Becca

Race Results...

The grid start was chaotic and saw some fantastic driving skill from Rob as he countered a defensive play from Robert P with a swift overtake of both Robert and Patrick to obtain second place by the end of the first lap. Unfortunately, the time lost in the melee was enough for an experienced Pete to generate a substantial lead from the chasing pack.

At the other end of the grid, Rebecca's determined effort had propelled her from 9th into 8th following a swift overtake of an Eliot still trying to find his feet in a fast kart.

That didn't last long though as Eliot's times began to consistently improve, proving that the more laps you do, the faster you become and someone who has raced many, many times on the track before would have a clear advantage over others.

As the race moved on, small mini races began to develop with Liam, Ellie and Karen generating a competitive pack behind the front 4 and just in front of that, Patrick and Robert consistently trading 3rd and 4th place throughout the mid section of the race.

Inevitably, the front 4 began to lap the pursuing drivers which lead to an incident involving Robert and Ellie that saw Robert being called to the pits to receive some driver training. This allowed Patrick to overtake him and sit comfortably in 3rd place and allowed Ellie some time to show off her drifting skills to some other drivers.
After a fantastic race, the results were as follows:

1 - Pete
2 - Rob L
3 - Patrick
4 - Robert P
5 - Liam
6 - Ellie
7 - Karen
8 - Eliot
9 - Becca

Christine came to watch and, unfortunately, Julie was unable to attend.

Advantages of Varistors and Their Applications in the Automotive Field

Multilayer chip varistors (MLVs) are resistive elements comprising zinc oxide (Zn0) as the main component. In recent decades, they are being used for protection against surge voltage, noise, and transient voltages.

Unlike conventional varistors, the maximum peak current and non-linear coefficients are large, and the resistance is very high below a threshold voltage, hardly allowing current to flow. However, when the voltage exceeds the threshold, the resistance drops abruptly and allows a large current to flow. Such properties make MLVs ideal as protective elements in a host of electrical and electronic applications, including automobiles.

Vitrohm Resistor Alternatives

With lead times increasing, DMTL look at suitable Vitrohm replacements within HTR (Hi-Tech Resistors) offering.

In the table on our website, we look at the suitable Vitrohm replacements from HTR.

DMTL is a fully franchised, authorised HTR distributor.
Based in Nagpur, India, HTR specialize in Standard and Customised Resistive Devices for Consumer, Industrial and Automotive use.
HTR have a complete R&D setup certified to ISO / TS 16949 : 2009 and offer a manufacturing capability of 4 million pieces per month.

Their key strengths are their competitive pricing with very short lead times, Lean organisation set up for quick decisions to benefit customers, Quality Driven focus and R&D to work with and design cost effective solutions as required by customers.

DMTL began their relationship with HTR via a UK distributor and, as a result of DMTL’s success, were appointed as direct Design Distributors in 2008. Subsequently, we have been successful in a wide range of applications, including Fire Detection, Lighting and Sonar. This growth has been brought about by the dynamic support of both the HTR development and manufacturing teams, who understand the importance of speed and accuracy in offering specifications and samples.
