FIVE WAYS TO KEEP YOUR PET COOL THIS SUMMER
1. Walk your dog very early in the morning or in the early evening - this will help avoid the hottest part of the day and prevent your dog from dehydrating and burning their paws on hot pavements or asphalt (test the surface with the back of your hand for 5 seconds - it it's too hot for you, it's too hot for them). You can use damp t-shirts or specially design "cool coats/bandana's for dogs" too.
2. Never leave your pet alone in your vehicle - even when the windows are down or the car is parked in the shade, these precautions are just not enough to stop your pet from overheating.
3. Make sure your pets have access to plenty of shade with clean, fresh water - put out extra bowls for them to drink from. You can use damp towels to help keep cats cool too.
4. On really hot and humid days, bring your pets inside - if you can keep you pets cool with air-conditioning, fans or open windows, your pets will thank you.
5. Keep your littlest pets in the shade or indoors at all times - because rabbits, birds, guinea pigs, rats, mice and ferrets are often kept in cages or hutches they can not seek cooler places so this will help. For further details, visit the RSPCA site.
