Exciting job opportunity - We’re hiring! 🐝 (UK-based)

We’re looking for a Senior Front-End Software Engineer to join our team at Hive IT! If you’re based in the UK, have 5+ years of experience, and are passionate about accessibility and user experience, then we’d love to hear from you.

This role is a 2-year fixed-term contract with the opportunity for extension. Please note that as part of the requirements for this role, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a BPSS check.

In this role, you’ll be working closely with key stakeholders, developers and designers. You’ll be working solely on our Department for Education project while leading and mentoring others in a supportive, flexible environment.

This role will be perfect for someone who has experience in:

- HTML / CSS / SASS
- Being able to identify and fix accessibility issues to meet WCAG standards
- Using code collaboration tools such as Git and GitHub / GitLab
- The ability to design user journeys and implement responsive UIs for different devices

SALARY: ÂŁ43 - 56k (FTE) per year depending on experience.
This role is expected to be full-time, with a 5-day working week, though we are open to flexible working.

We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, flexible working hours, 27 days annual leave, discretionary Christmas closure without using annual leave and much more.

We’re also proud to be an inclusive employer, running an anonymised hiring process to remove bias and support diversity in tech.

Even if you don’t tick every box but have a passion to learn, then still get in touch. We love training and developing our people and helping them reach their full potential. 💛

It's World Breastfeeding Week

Returning to work is one of the most common reasons breastfeeding journeys end early. Not because parents want to stop, but because the support isn't there. That's something employers can fix, so we've joined Breastfeeding in Sheffield.

We've put a breastfeeding policy in place at Hive IT:
— a private, comfortable space
— flexible working
— paid expressing breaks
— honest conversations before and after maternity leave.

And anyone visiting our office is welcome to breastfeed here.

Swipe through to see what we've committed to 👇

If you're a Sheffield employer, joining the scheme is simple and free https://www.breastfeeding-south-yorkshire.co.uk/

Last week, we got together for our annual summer social. 🌭

Good food, good company and plenty of sunshine.

For this year's social, we were kindly hosted by Riverside Kelham. It was a brilliant afternoon with the team and a chance to step away from our desks and spend some time together.

Spending time together in these settings is important. We're not just here to celebrate our work but to build relationships and connections that strengthen our team.

Thanks to everyone who came along and helped make it such a lovely afternoon. We appreciate all the hard work you do. 💛

Massive congratulations to Spain on lifting the trophy!

That also means, for the Hive charity sweepstake, big congratulations to Cancer Research UK(CRUK), who’ll be receiving the prize pot as the winner of our Hive charity sweepstake.

This chosen charity was selected by one of our team members.

It has been so fun seeing the team get behind another tournament while supporting causes that matter to them.

Congrats to the winner and thanks to everyone who took part! 🐝

Last year at Hive, we hosted a charity sweepstake for the Women's Euros, with the Lionesses bringing home the trophy and Ashgate Hospice receiving the prize pot.

This year, it’s another final and another great opportunity to support a great cause.

Each of us put in and got randomly assigned a team. 🤩

The winner would donate the pot to a charity of their choice, with Hive doubling the donations.

Now it’s down to the two finalists: Spain is represented by Cancer Research UK (CRUK), selected by a member of our team. While Argentina is represented by Grow UK, chosen by a member of the Hive team.

This has become a fun tradition that brings our team together whilst supporting causes that matter to us. These charities mean a lot to them, so we’re excited to see how this plays out and which brilliant charity comes out on top.

Good luck to both finalists!

Back in February, we had our first group of students from various schools across Sheffield spend time with us during their work experience week.

This World Youth Skills Day, we’re celebrating the power of learning through experience.

Last week, we held our second and final round of students, all eager to learn and gain insight into what it is like to work in a digital agency.

We wanted to give young students a different taste of a typical work experience week. Instead of simply allowing them to shadow our team members or just assigning them a task and leaving them to it, we aimed for a more engaging approach.

We wanted to show them how different departments in the business work together to create digital solutions.

That means students get to spend more time with teams right across the business, exploring how ideas move from concept to delivery. Covering user research and design, and hands-on experience building with code. To quality assurance experience to learn about testing, security and how to keep products and websites reliable.

We created a structure to facilitate work experience students where it doesn’t rely solely on one person all week. Instead, we created a template we could tweak and reuse, with shared responsibility across the teams at Hive.

This is just some of the positive feedback we got from our students:

“Well-defined plan. I never felt like I didn’t know what I was doing”.

“From the talk at my school, the staff at Hive IT seemed very friendly”.

“An interactive way of learning about each role”.

We have enjoyed having these two work experience weeks with the students, and we have learned a lot from them too! We hope to open it up next year using all the valuable feedback to make it even better. 🐝 💛

We’ve been adding to the Hive IT team over the last few months, and we think it’s time to make some introductions.

Please join us in welcoming Jason and Jim to the team, our new Delivery Managers here at Hive.

Jason joins us as a Senior Delivery Manager who comes with a vast background in advertising campaigns, website builds, game development, product design and digital transformation. Basically, if it needed delivering, he’s delivered it! We’re excited to see him really take hold of projects and succeed in his new role.

Jim joins us as a Delivery Manager, with experience in development, product and delivery management; he's the kind of person who actually enjoys solving complicated problems through collaboration, with a keen interest in new technology. He has a passionate focus, and we're excited to benefit from that.

We’re lucky to have them both on board and excited to see them do great things!

Welcome, Jason and Jim! 🐝

At Hive, we always aim to enhance our team members’ work experience and overall job satisfaction.

A couple of years ago, the idea of volunteering days kept coming up in conversations. We decided to take action now so each Hive IT team member can take up to five paid days off for volunteering a year.

This could be choosing to help charities, using our skills to support non-profit organisations or contributing to local community and environmental projects.

Recently, some of our team members spent some time volunteering for a second year in a row at Sheffield DocFest.

Doc Fest is one of the city’s most loved festivals, and a brilliant celebration of creativity, community and the power of storytelling.

Here’s what Duncan Watson (Technical Director at Hive IT) had to say about his volunteering experience:

"I was very lucky to be able to volunteer for a second year running at Sheffield DocFest this year. Last year was all about supporting people in experiencing powerful storytelling through the use of VR and AR, and this year, I was working as part of the Venue Crew, supporting the amazing Sheffield Theatres staff in welcoming festival-goers and speakers to the venues.

A highlight for me was the panel discussion "Rose Ayling-Ellis: Sign Language Front & Centre", which explored the impact of embedding deaf stories, deaf characters and British Sign Language into mainstream programming rather than adding in support and translations after the fact.

It was another year full of food for thought and differing perspectives, and I look forward to signing up for next year." 💛

Volunteering is one of the best ways we stay connected to our city, to each other and to the communities we’re part of.

We're proud to support our team through their volunteering days to enhance their experience of working with Hive IT.

Our ’New to Sheffield’ case study is out, detailing a brand-new website created in partnership with our friends at Learn for Life Enterprise.

It details how we started the project by working with users within the Sheffield community. It covers the tools we used to develop the website, design, branding and what’s next for the website.

The ‘New to Sheffield’ site is designed to warmly welcome newcomers, providing essential information on where to go, what to do, and whom to talk to.

So grab yourself a brew if you fancy a read ☕

If you have a project of your own and need help, we’d love to hear what you’re working on.

Back in 2024, we made a commitment to encourage an equitable, diverse and inclusive work environment in our business.

We partnered with accrEDIted™ from The EDI Mark C.I.C. to help us assess where we stood on EDI and, most importantly, identify the changes we needed to make to better align our values with the lived experiences of our team.

We’re so proud to announce that Hive IT has achieved the 'Dedicated' level in our latest EDI audit!

We are so glad to have moved up a level from our original ‘Accredited’ status to this milestone, as it shows that we are moving in the right direction as a business. 🙌

This milestone signifies that we have made a strong start and are committed to continuous improvement in diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The 'Dedicated' status reflects our dedication to creating a fair, equal, and inclusive environment for all our employees.

With a score between 65-79%, we’re pleased to see that many of our team members feel supported and valued.

This is just the beginning of our EDI journey, and we remain focused on making progress and enhancing our practices for everyone at Hive IT.
