Just in! BTA10-600B TRIACS - https://www.bitsboxuk.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=140_167_170&products_id=4280

If you haven't used a TRIAC before you might be asking what does a TRIAC actually do?

Think of a TRIAC as an electronic switch for mains electricity - like a relay, but with no moving parts or contacts that can wear out. The BTA10-600B is commonly used to control AC devices such as:

* Light dimmers.
* Heater controls.
* Motor speed circuits.

Unlike a normal relay or switch that is either ON or OFF, a TRIAC can rapidly switch power on and off many times per second. This allows circuits to control how much power reaches a device.

The β€œ10” means it can handle up to 10 amps, while β€œ600” means it is designed for voltages up to 600V.

Frequently found in domestic appliances, it is a good choice to have on hand for repair work.

⚠️ Important: TRIAC circuits are usually connected directly to mains electricity, so always use proper safety precautions.

When should you use a log potentiometer rather than linear?
So what is a log (Audio / A-taper) potentiometer?
What it does:
Resistance changes slowly at first, then faster near the end of rotation. This matches how human hearing works (we perceive loudness logarithmically).
Typical uses:
Volume controls and gain controls (amps, mixers, radios)
How it feels:
Turning from 0 β†’ halfway = small change
Halfway β†’ full = big jump
Rule of thumb:
If it’s about sound level, you almost always want log.

Here's a fun little pocket money project as an introduction to discrete component astable multivibrators or ring oscillators. An easy build on a supplied PCB, it produces a rotating ring pattern of flashing LEDs. Instruction leaflet with circuit description and all the board mounted components included.

Ok, so what's happening over the next few days.

Today will be the last despatch day this week - we do not have a Royal Mail collection on Christmas Eve. Any orders received after about 3.30pm today will go in the post next Monday.

Site upgrade and server move on Christmas Eve. The website will go into maintenance mode tomorrow afternoon while we perform an upgrade and move to a new server. The upgraded cart system has a number of new features - a one page checkout, the ability to checkout without having an account, Paypal Express and a new card processing supplier, among others. Hopefully everything goes smoothly and we're back up within a few hours.

In the meantime, a Merry Christmas to all our loyal customers. Have a good one.
