Windows 11 comes with AI in the form of Copilot. Many people are not happy to have AI turn on due to fears about security. This guide will help you turn off Copilot.

How to disable Copilot in Windows 11

There are two ways to remove Copilot. The first simply removes the icon from your taskbar, which is all you may want. The second disables Copilot completely. This guide will cover both.
How to remove Copilot from your Taskbar in Windows 11
Here's how to remove Copilot from your Windows 11 taskbar if you no longer want it there. This doesn't disable Copilot completely (see next section).

1. Go to Settings > Personalization

First up, open the Settings app and click Personalization.

2. Click Taskbar

Now scroll down and select Taskbar.

3. Toggle off Copilot

Finally, click the toggle to turn off Copilot.

How to disable Copilot completely in Windows 11

Here's how to completely disable Copilot in Windows 11. If you want to enable it again at any point, simply follow these steps again and select "Not configured" or "Disabled" instead of "Enabled" in the last step.

1. Click Start and open the Group policy editor

Click Start and search "gpedit" then open the Group policy editor when it appears.

2. Go to User configuration > Administrative templates > Windows components > Windows Copilot

In the left hand panel, navigate to User configuration > Administrative templates > Windows components > Windows Copilot.

3. Double-click Turn off Windows Copilot

Double click the Turn off windows Copilot policy on the right-hand panel.

4. Click Enabled > Apply > OK

Click Enabled and click Apply then click OK. It seems counter intuitive to be clicking Enabled here, but we are enabling a policy to disable Copilot.

That's all there is to it. If you'd like more help with using Windows call 07787 845086.

iPhone, Android malware breaks into your banking apps using your face — here's how it works

A new malware by the name of GoldPickaxe is affecting Android and iOS devices in a big way. Spotted by Group-IB (via BleepingComputer), the GoldPickaxe malware tricks users into installing fraudulent apps and scanning their faces and ID documents. This sensitive information is then used to create deepfakes that allow the threat actors to gain unauthorized access to your banking app.

The GoldPickaxe malware is developed by GoldFactory, a Chinese hacker group that's also responsible for GoldDigger, GoldDiggerPlus, and GoldKefu malware. Right now, the group seems to be primarily targeting Thailand and Vietnam, but these techniques could be used to target other countries, either by GoldFactory or other malicious groups.
With that said, here's how the GoldPickaxe malware works and what to be cautious of over the next few months.

How GoldPickaxe malware works on Android and iOS
Between June 2023 and now, the GoldFactory malware group has distributed multiple threat packages, most of which targeted only Android users. However, its newest GoldPickaxe malware that started in Oct. 2023 targets both Android and iOS users.

Currently, victims are being targeted through phishing or smishing messages on the LINE app, which is a popular messaging app in Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand. These messages—written in the user's local language—impersonate government authorities and con victims into installing fraudulent apps, like the Digital Pension app below, from websites that look like Google Play.

The GoldPickaxe malware can target iPhone users in two ways. First, it directs victims to open a TestFlight URL that installs a legitimate TestFlight app in addition to the malware. If the TestFlight method doesn't work, the GoldFactory group sends out a malicious Mobile Device Management (MDM) profile, and if the iPhone user downloads it, the threat group gains control over the device.

Once someone has unknowingly installed the trojan horse, it can read incoming SMS messages, control background functions on the phone, request ID documents, and capture the victim's face. BleepingComputer points out that "use of the victims' faces for bank fraud is an assumption by Group-IB," but this is "corroborated by the Thai police."

Despite the fact that the GoldPickaxe malware can capture the faces of its victims and steal images, it can't access your official biometric data on Android or iOS. Your biometric data is encrypted and kept separate from running apps.

According to Group-IB, Android users are at a higher risk than iOS users, partly because Apple has higher security restrictions and partly because GoldPickaxe uses over 20 different fake apps on Android. Plus, with the iOS 17 update, these 3 game-changing security features were added to many iPhones.

Microsoft Outlook App Now Needs Microsoft Edge To Work

• Several users have posted screenshots on Reddit showcasing an error message asking them to install Microsoft Edge on their devices while trying to access the new Outlook app for Windows.
• The main reason why this is happening is because the app leverages the Microsoft Edge Webview 2 for various web functions.
• Mozilla recently placed Microsoft under fire for using deceitful and harmful designs to get people to use Microsoft Edge on Windows devices forcefully.

Despite Microsoft's heavy investment and a big push for AI on Microsoft Edge and Bing, Google continues to dominate the search and browser market share. But recent reports show that the tech giant isn't taking this lightly.

Earlier this month, Mozilla placed Microsoft under fire for using harmful designs and deceptive tactics to give Edge a competitive advantage over other browsers on Windows. And now, it seems Microsoft has a new "trick" under its sleeve designed to get more people to use its Chromium browser, Microsoft Edge.

It seems having Microsoft Edge installed is a mandatory requirement for running the new Outlook app on Windows 11 and Windows 10 (via MSPowerUser). Several users have posted screenshots on Reddit with error messages indicating they need Microsoft Edge installed on their Windows PC to access the new Outlook app.

This error message pop-up is that the new Outlook app leverages the Microsoft Edge Webview 2 for various web functions. As such, users will need to have Microsoft Edge installed on their devices to access the new Outlook's web-based features.
It's Microsoft Edge versus other browsers at this point.

In a report by Mozilla earlier this month, the company indicated that Microsoft doesn't allow users to use any browser as their default setup on Windows. Many users echo these sentiments while simultaneously complaining about how bloated Microsoft Edge has gotten over the past few years.

This isn't the first time this is happening, either. Last year, Microsoft Edge was being forced on users again through Microsoft Outlook and Teams. Users were forced to open links from Azure Active Directory accounts, and Microsoft accounts in Edge by default, regardless of their default browser settings. This might be another reason the new desktop Outlook is a bad idea.

The new Outlook app for Windows brings a whole new redesign and is faster and lighter than the previous Mail app for Windows. Users can skip the A/B testing and download it from the Microsoft Store directly.
