Understanding the England Primary School Education System

A child’s primary education lays the foundation for future learning. In England, primary school follows the National Curriculum, which is designed to help children develop strong knowledge, confidence, and essential life skills.

Primary School Years

Primary education is divided into two stages:

Key Stage 1 (KS1)

KS1 SATs in England – What Parents Should Know

Many parents still ask about KS1 SATs, but it’s important to know that statutory KS1 SATs are no longer required in England. Schools now assess pupils using ongoing teacher assessments based on the England Primary National Curriculum.

However, many schools and tuition providers continue to use KS1-style SATs papers as mock assessments. These mock exams are an excellent way to:

* Build children’s confidence.
* Familiarise them with question formats.
* Identify strengths and areas that need improvement.
* Prepare pupils for future assessments, including KS2 SATs.
