A family reunion helps us connect with our roots, celebrate family accomplishments and bond with those we love and share a history with. From children hearing stories about their forgotten relatives, to trying recipes that have been passed down over the years, they help us reaffirm our sense of identity and belonging.
The next time you manage to get everyone together, ask them to bring photos - it's a great way to kick-start your life story book, sparking memories of people and events you might have forgotten.

How do you come to terms with regret? Admitting your thoughts, feelings and actions by telling others, or writing about them, can bring physical and mental benefits, as self-revelation is linked to reduced blood pressure and better coping skills. By understanding what you regret most, you can understand what you value the most - and these findings will underpin a considered and stimulating life story.

Most people find that particular music will vividly reanimate times in their life, which can be in turns nostalgic, uplifting and emotional. So sit back and put a favourite album on and you might find that those song lyrics even help to articulate some of your life experiences and express the feelings that are hard to put into words. And use them to start writing your life story! https://www.memorylanebooks.co.uk/blog

I discovered the earliest English autobiography on a trip to the British Library this weekend - The Book of Margery Kempe. Written in 1440, it records, “hyr felyngys and revelacyons and the forme of her levyng” (her feelings and revelations and the form of her living), providing a window into the life of an ordinary, middle-class woman in late-medieval England. It contains plenty of detail to help us visualise her life, and despite being nearly 600 years old, I can see some parallels with my own life story writing as Margery dictated her book to an amanuensis – a scribe who wrote it down for her. It would be great to think that someone might read one of the books I've helped to write in 600 years' time!

Now that lockdown is easing, I’ve been enjoying getting face-to-face with friends and family again - the simple pleasure of sharing tea and cake in the sunshine has been wonderful.
We all naturally want to meet and interact with other people rather than on Zoom, as it's the best way to build and develop strong relationships. Social contact is even said to help improve memory formation and recall, and protect the brain from neurodegenerative diseases.
I’m really looking forward to doing life story interviews face-to-face again too. It’s a privilege to share memories with a client about their life – and meeting in person makes it, well….more personal and enjoyable than a virtual meeting. Tea and cake optional!

We might not particularly want to remember the last year when most of our interactions have been on Zoom, but think further back - to childhood, family life, holidays, best friends and achievements - and use these dark days and evenings to dig out those old photographs, diaries and special momentos.
Life is unpredictable and precious and if there was ever a time to record your stories to prevent them from being forgotten, it’s now.

There are many ways to spark the creative process. One life story writer talks about collating personal essays, each one told through the lens of fashion: a loved maternity dress, a hated childhood jumper or a sundress worn on a special holiday. Using photos of yourself in these outfits would work wonderfully throughout a book and they'd be a great 'hanger' for the stories about those significant times of your life.
