This last week i had a call to ask if i could pop to take a look at a job where the lights were flickering and the cooker circuit was tripping randomly.

Upon visiting the property and inspecting a lot of the rcbos had loose/poorly terminated cables. A couple were even just sat in loose terminals and one was cracked from overtightening.

The customer wasn't happy as they had another contractor carry out electrical work as well as change the consumer unit in the past 12 months. Im amazed they had managed 12 months.

All the circuit cables were removed cut re-stripped & properly terminated before being torqued to the manufactures specification using a torque screwdriver.

Funnily enough there has been no more tripping or flickering lights since.

Sometimes it pays to make sure the basics are correct with solid torqued to manfactures spec connections.

Finished 1st fix of a kitchen this week. Obviously had to keep the power on as customer is fitting the kitchen. Also added a new circuit for the new double oven that will go under the stairs.

This will also be getting a board upgrade to a Hager RCBO board. Along with click deco satin chrome accessories.

So this Job was another to do as and when time allows. Convert the current split load board to a full RCBO board to get rid of nusiance tripping caused by shared RCDs serving several circuits.

Will be carrying out further works here soon running a new SWA supply to the existing garage so the old overhead Pyro feed can be disconnected and the garage rewired. Along with some new outdoor lighting.

Sometimes you just get to go to those jobs you wont forget ever.

The cpc to these acessories has been removed completley. Less than ideal.

Upon pulling the socket forward the line conductor wasnt terminated in place.

These are just a couple of things we found on a recent EICR of a shop.

As well as melted connector block in a light switch the cable was phsically warm to touch also.

At the time of test all the lighting for the entire building was found tagged into a 32 amp mcb suspected due to overloading (clamped at 9 amps)

Remedial work is ongoing at current. Including removal of old unused circuits and cable.

Then full labeling and schedules can take place to make it much easier for the next time any maintinance or electrical work is undertaken. It isnt easy working around a shop thats open 7 till midnight 7 days a week.

However we are managing to keep the buissness open while carrying out vital remedials and upgrades.

From time to time we all have one of those jobs. Where you get a call to do 1 thing,in this case fit some new lights.

Sometimes you have to stop and call the owner and carry out immediate works to make safe something that is dangerous.

Just for context all these were in a shop store room. Where lights had been added very poorly. On inspection conductors had been twisted together with no means of connection some bare with 230V flowing the gentleman working in the shop had no idea.

See one picture where there was already signs of arching on the back of the light fitting. Safe isolation was immediately carried out and all cables made safe to control immediate danger.

The owner immediatley met us at the property to discuss, as he had recently taken on the property. Which included a satisfactory electrical condition report.

Electrical safety is very important and is sometimes overlooked. We made this safe the same day and still carried out our expected works. We reccomended a full EICR, which is booked in, out of hours as to not disturb the buissness.
