Wavemaker Stoke Wavemaker is a social impact organisation helping people bridge the digital divide. Wavemaker Stoke is about ‘Making Making Work’.

We provide skills, tools, and confidence to thrive - from job applications and healthcare access to creativity, connectivity, and AI literacy. Wavemaker is the delivery and implementation of a three year programme for Comic Relief via Robbie Williams’ Give it Sum and Nominet Trust about opening an iconic maker space for designer makers, learners and experts in North Staffordshire, the creative cou

nty. Our bigger aim is to create an iconic space where designer makers can inspire makers of tomorrow. Utilising industry leading technology to bring together and support learners, makers and experts. Using innovative learning concepts within a community designed space, we will shape the future for making. Even though the funding is for three years we are already looking at a ten year business plan and further funding including large capital bids. We plan to address a range of problems, in Stoke on Trent and further afield, which include:

• The gap in digital skills with young people, specifically the skills for the future.

• Lack of opportunities for young people and others to access digital spaces/opportunities and ones that are of quality.

• Lack of opportunity to share skills and knowledge between professionals and budding learners/makers. We want to have a space where learners mix with makers and experts. Ask questions, problem solve, deconstruct and rebuild and to provide opportunities to develop their skills.

🎉 Happy Learning Disability Week! 🎉

Did you know that Learning Disability Week got started right here in the UK several years ago? It was created with the beautiful purpose of giving a voice to those who have historically been less recognised because of their learning disabilities. 🗣

Education and awareness surrounding what it means to have additional needs are incredibly important, especially since learning disabilities impact at least 15-20% of the global population. 🌍

Speaking of awareness, did you know that the most common learning disability is dyslexia? As many as 80% of all people with learning disabilities have dyslexia. Assistive technology and having the right digital device can make reading and navigating the world so much easier for those who need support. 💻✨

Currently, only 1.2% of adults with a learning disability are employed, even though 86% of those who are unemployed want to have a paid job. 💼🤓

This is exactly where digital access changes the game! At Wavemaker, we truly believe that everyone deserves access to education and a voice, regardless of their disability. We are passionate about empowering people with the digital access and everyday tech skills they need to thrive. By helping people get online and navigate the digital world, Wavemaker has supported many individuals in building their confidence, accessing vital services, job searching and breaking down everyday barriers. 👏🫂
