A quick bit of advice that could save your data.

If your hard drive suddenly starts clicking, disappearing, taking forever to open files or causing the computer to freeze, don't keep restarting it to see if it'll work the next time.

If the drive is physically failing, every additional attempt to use it can potentially make matters worse.

Another one to watch for is Windows suddenly telling you that a drive needs to be formatted. If that drive already contains files you need, don't automatically click Format.

SSDs can be even less forgiving. Because there are no moving parts, you won't necessarily get the noises associated with a failing mechanical hard drive, and some failures can happen with much less warning.

The best protection will always be a good backup.

But if the backup doesn't exist and the data matters, stop using the drive and get some advice before trying repair or recovery software.

Sometimes knowing when to stop is the most important part of recovering the data.

This PS5 came in for a damaged HDMI port, but once it was stripped down we found a little more than expected.

The HDMI port needed replacing, but the cooling system was also heavily clogged with dust.

Going further into the console revealed another issue. There was oxidation around the APU contact area and the liquid metal wasn't spreading properly, leaving poor contact across the surface.

So rather than simply replacing the HDMI port and putting it back together, the console received some much-needed attention while it was apart.

Damaged HDMI port replaced, cooling system cleaned, APU contact area serviced and liquid metal sorted.

After reassembly and testing, we have a good HDMI output and another PS5 back up and running.

This is why I like to properly inspect consoles when they're stripped down. Sometimes the fault they come in with isn't the only problem waiting to cause trouble.

This HP Omen gaming laptop simply died overnight.

The customer had been using it normally, but the following day it wouldn't switch on at all.

After stripping the laptop down, the first problem was pretty obvious — a capacitor had failed badly enough to actually burn into the motherboard.

Removing the damaged component wasn't the end of the story though. The laptop was still completely dead.

Further testing found a short circuit on the main power rail. By injecting a controlled low voltage into the affected circuit, I was able to trace the short to a failed power management component that was heating up.

A replacement component was ordered, the faulty one removed and the new part microsoldered onto the motherboard.

Short circuit gone.

Laptop powered up.

Fully reassembled and tested, and it's now working properly again.

This is the type of repair I particularly enjoy. Rather than replacing an entire motherboard because a laptop won't power on, proper board-level diagnostics can sometimes identify and repair the individual component responsible.

If your laptop or MacBook suddenly dies, it doesn't necessarily mean it's finished.

☀️ Annual Holiday Notice ☀️

Just a quick update to let everyone know that North East Tech Repair will be closed from Thursday 23rd July until Monday 3rd August while I take my annual holiday.

I'll be returning on Monday 3rd August, refreshed and ready to get back to repairing your phones, laptops, Macs, PCs, games consoles, and recovering your important data.
