I ran a Google Maps visibility check on an electrician in Stratford-upon-Avon this week.

25 points across their service area. Top 3 ranking at 1 of them. Outside the top 20 entirely at 5 of them.

Same business, same trade, different result depending on which street the customer is standing on.

Most local businesses only ever check their own ranking from their own address. They look fine from there. The picture three streets over can be completely different, and there’s no way to know that without checking.

Do I actually need a website anymore, or is social media enough?

This question came up in a Facebook group today and the replies were fascinating.

After reading dozens of real responses from business owners (not marketers), one pattern stood out:

Social media is where people discover you.
Your website is where people decide.

Even businesses doing well without a website admitted something interesting:
• People still Google them
• People still look for reassurance
• People still hesitate if there’s nothing solid to check

What surprised me most?
Several business owners said people they’ve never spoken to quietly checked their website… then just booked.

No DMs.
No back and forth.
Decision made.

The businesses growing consistently aren’t choosing one or the other.

Social creates visibility.
Google creates intent.
A simple website turns intent into action.
