For much of the 20th century, the telephone network in Britain was operated by the **General Post Office (GPO)**. It was responsible for telephone services, exchanges and much of the infrastructure that kept the country connected.
In 1981, telecommunications were separated from the Post Office and **British Telecom** was established as a separate public corporation - marking the beginning of a new era for UK telecommunications.
It’s incredible to see just how far the industry has come, from manual telephone exchanges and switchboards to today’s cloud-based communications, VoIP and unified solutions.
At **SM Unified Solutions**, telecommunications isn't just what we do - it's an industry with a fascinating history that continues to evolve.
