Computers exist for data - not the other way round. Without data, computers are practically worthless - just as without musical compositions musical instruments are functionally useless.
In other words, the most important thing on your computer is your data. Everything else on it can be replaced in the event of a disaster - except the data; unless it is backed up. For this reason, proper backing up of data is widely regarded by IT professionals as the most important task that a serious computer user should perform. Data is the one and only thing on a computer system that could be lost forever. Applications can be re-installed - and hardware can be replaced - but photographs of important occasions and certain unique documents, for instance, cannot.
