One of my favourite things about what I do is the variety. Last week, I was asked to set up a recording microphone for a more senior client who wanted to dictate her life story for a book.

What a lovely thing it was to help with.

Tech is supposed to make our lives easier, but sometimes, for inexplicable reasons, it doesn't! Zeena had urgent emails to send, but her email was having none of it!

After quickly sorting the issue over the phone, I followed that up with a visit to set up her new computer and make sure she was happy with how everything worked

When a new client contacts me, I always try to resolve as much of the problem as possible over the phone, then follow up with a visit if needed.

Warm enough for you? If, like me, you don't go anywhere without your phone, here are 6 ways to keep your phone from overheating in this hot weather:

1. Make sure your phone is up to date with all its software updates
2. Avoid things that use a lot of power - streaming, videoing, playing games, etc
3. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight
4. Limit charging - especially fast charging or charging a phone in a hot room
5. Remove the case
6. Switch your phone to power saver mode

Something I was reminded of recently is how important it is to know your loved one's login details in case something happens to them. Also, the importance of having a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) in place.

I've seen far too many grieving clients (because of a death or dealing with someone living with dementia) who are also struggling to access their loved one's online accounts, bank accounts, social media, subscriptions, etc., etc.

Please, please have a safe place to store all your passwords and keep them up to date with any changes.

Let your trusted loved one(s) know where this is.

If there is 2-factor authorisation, you need to know which devices or apps control it, and what the account recovery options are.

Speak to someone about an LPA. This will allow you to act on behalf of your loved one in the event of death or incapacitation.

This is not a nice subject to talk about, but it's so important. Please act on it if you don't have anything in place.

An increasing number of my clients who live in more rural areas have been struggling with their internet connection, which is a problem for some of my senior clients who feel isolated and for my self-employed clients who are trying to run a business.

One thing that I’ve been trialling for the last six months is Starlink satellite internet, as a way to help clients (and me when I’m out and about on the road and away in Harriet, my motor home) have reliable internet.

So far, I’ve been really impressed with the coverage their Roaming option has given me, and they also offer internet packages for homes and businesses.

If you’re out in the sticks and struggle with reliable internet, it might be an option for you.

Oh, and I’m not on their payroll!

Because I subscribe to their Roaming package, I do have a referral link that gives the person that signs up (and me) a free month of internet.

I sometimes visit clients who are embarrassed by their lack of tech or IT knowledge and feel they SHOULD be able to fix 'simple' problems or at least know a bit more about how everything works.

My message to them (and you, if that's how you feel) is, please don't be!

That's why I'm here.

I will never make you feel like an idiot. In fact, I do my best to educate and empower you to help yourself where possible. I'll even teach you how to do something if that's what you want.

Never feel embarrassed by your lack of tech knowledge, and if you want to learn how to do something - from setting up your phone or smart TV to streamlining your emails or files - get in touch.

As you've probably guessed, I love helping anyone with their tech issues, but I feel especially proud when I get a fellow small business owner's tech back up and running.

Running my own business, I know what it's like if one of your processes goes down (especially if it's how people see or communicate with you). That's why I try to get to a small business client and fix their issue as soon as possible.

When I go to a job, I rarely know what I'll be dealing with, but I always drive away thinking how much I love my job because it offers so much variety, and my clients are so grateful that I’ve managed to help them.

Yes, it can sometimes be frustrating, as tech can do weird, unexpected things. Even if the issue takes longer to resolve than planned, my 40 years of IT experience and sheer bloody-mindedness mean I always find a way.

I know this isn't business-related, but I wanted to share the exciting news that my beautiful identical twin granddaughters, Ellie and Ettie, have arrived. They were born premature on 25 April, but I've had to keep quiet about it until now.

They are 34 weeks old and doing brilliantly - another 3 weeks in NICU in Bath, we think, and then they'll be allowed home.

I'm so proud of my daughter, twins in your first pregnancy! I am over the moon to be a grandma, it’s the best (early) 60th birthday present I could have wished for.
