Phone scams are on the rise! We have all had a nuisance call at some point, selling double glazing or advising us about mis-sold PPI, even silent calls with no one at the other end, but the UK is seeing an alarming rise in phone scams.

Since the advent of the Coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns, thousands of us have spent much more time at home than previously. Fraudsters are reaping the consequences of this, knowing we are more likely to answer a call they make to inform us of bogus problems, while claiming to be from reputable companies.

The list of such companies affected by fraudulent callers posing as genuine members of staff is extensive, with some of the most well-known companies and organisations being imitated, such as:

Amazon
HMRC
Apple
Microsoft
National Insurance
Banking and credit card companies
TalkTalk
Census 2021
Royal Mail
NHS

Fresh warnings have been issued regarding the latest Royal Mail scams and the potential threats to customers.

With the UK currently in lockdown and only essential shops allowed to trade, many of us are turning to online shopping more than ever before. So, when you receive a text message or email allegedly from Royal Mail, informing you that there is a fee to pay before delivery, you may think very little more of it because you are expecting a delivery. Alternatively, you may have been advised that delivery was attempted and then asked to rearrange delivery by clicking on a link within the email.

These scams are, for all intents and purposes, quite legitimate looking at first glance; they contain the official Royal Mail branding, a copyright blurb at the bottom, registered trading addresses and more. But, delve deeper and all is not as it seems. The scam emails and texts are addressed generically, rather than addressing you by name. Look at the sender’s email address - in the above example, the sender is from writelier.com rather than from Royal Mail itself.

Covid Vaccines And Passports are for Sale On The Dark Web!!

Cybercriminals are once more cashing in on vulnerabilities raised during the Covid-19 pandemic by selling covid vaccines, forged vaccine passports and faked negative tests on the dark web.

The Covid-19 pandemic has seen more than a fair share of fraudulent activities, such as counterfeit PPE, telephone and email scams, fictitious remedies, and not to mention plenty of fake news across social media pages.

The latest dark web activity involves seeing a sharp increase in adverts for forged negative test results, forged vaccine passports and even doses of the vaccine itself since the official rollout of the vaccine.

With prices starting from $500 (£360) for a single vaccine dose, vendors are hoping to make money from those who are worried about the virus, the fact that some countries have insufficient supplies or even from those simply wishing to queue-jump.

Cybersecurity firm Check Point has been doing some significant research into this and has ascertained what sellers are offering:

• $25 will buy a fake negative Covid-19 test result
• $250 could get you a fake Covid-19 vaccine passport
• $500 - $1000 could secure an AstraZeneca, Sputnik, Sinopharm or Johnson & Johnson vaccine dose.
• In just 6 weeks, prices for these demands have doubled and, on some sites, they have even quadrupled!
• The number of adverts for these goods and services has tripled within the last three months

Digital vendors are ramping up their sales tactics, with offers such as “Buy two, get one free!”, “selling fast!” and assuring ‘stealth’ delivery. Some are making promises that the faked documents will help you to get the job you want, or enable you to travel abroad; in fact, the forged documents will help with any situation where proof of vaccination or a negative test is required.

A UK vaccine passport is currently under consideration and would allow people to fly abroad, attend a concert and enjoy access to restaurants and bars. Due to this, the demand for a vaccine passport in the UK could become far greater.

However, buying from the dark web doesn’t come without risk. You are handing over personal and banking details to serious cybercriminals. There is absolutely no guarantee that your purchase will ever arrive and you can’t complain to a vendor that has disappeared with your money.

The Head of Product Vulnerabilities Research at Check Point, Oded Vanunu has stated
"It's imperative for people to understand that attempting to obtain a vaccine, a vaccination card or negative Covid-19 test result by unofficial means is extremely risky, as hackers are more interested in your money, information and identity for exploitation."

As part of their research, the Check Point team purchased a vaccine dose, using cryptocurrency known as Bitcoin, that has yet to materialise. The seller’s account also now appears to be missing! There is no way of clarifying how many of these accounts may be genuine and offering real vaccines, or if they are scams that take your money and disappear - this is the nature of buying from the dark web and being shrouded in anonymity.

Cybercriminals can exploit your personal details on the dark web too, selling part or all of your identity, from your name, address and date-of-birth, to bank accounts and passport numbers. Take advantage of your free FraudWeb search with Notty; we search to see if your details are for sale on the dark web and will alert you if so, and inform you of the next steps to take.

Think twice before you answer posts asking what your first ‘something’ was!

A lot of posts are shared between friends telling others what their first pet’s name was, mother’s maiden name, middle name, where they were born etc. It’s fun when contained between you and your group but it’s also a hacker’s dream! In that one post you have pretty much given away answers to the majority of security questions used to identify you. Use common sense with any posts like that. You don’t have to answer all of them, if at all.

What you should never post online - Personal Details!

It seems obvious that we shouldn’t post our home address, but people still do just that, and more. From full dates of birth to personal phone numbers, anything you post online can be assumed public.

Although your privacy settings may be strict, it only takes someone to screenshot your information or a hacker to get into your account and they have that info. Imagine if a friend lost their phone and someone accessed their social media, including friends list? It pays to be vigilant.

Ring Home Security Camera Hacking!!

Do you have one and is it safe?

Some Ring home-security camera owners have claimed that hackers have managed to speak to children via the cameras, in an attempt to scare residents in their own homes which is clearly a cause for concern. Claims include spying on people during intimate moments and then taunting a police officer when she arrives at the claimant’s home after it being reported.

Social media platform TikTok has hit the headlines yet again due to the circulation of a graphic video on its platform. After appearing on Facebook’s live-stream initially, the clip was quickly circulated on other social media platforms, including TikTok.

Just days before World Su***de Prevention Day (WSPD) on Thursday 10th September, the disturbing clip shows a man committing su***de live on camera from his home. TikTok has since come under fire for not doing enough to remove the video, nor doing it quickly enough.

33-year-old Ronnie McNutt live-streamed the harrowing footage from his home in Missouri on 31st August 2020. There are unconfirmed reports that Mr McNutt had Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and had recently broken up with his girlfriend. He was also an Army veteran, having served in the Iraq war.

Ever used Tinder? Well if you did your photos could be on the dark web, being sold to blackmail you or create false identities.

Over 70,000 photos were discovered by a cybersecurity firm named White Ops, as well as a text file containing 16,000 Tinder IDs.

Aaron DeVera, a researcher at White Ops, has said to be very disturbed that the hackers were openly targeting only female users. DeVera is also a member of New York City’s cyber sexual assault task force and is concerned that risqué pictures may be released due to the nature of the app and that this is not something the users would necessarily want in the public domain.

This doesn’t come at a good time as just recently some dating apps, including Tinder, have been found to have leaked personal information to advertising tech companies. A report by The Norwegian Consumer Council has revealed that this may have violated the laws of European data privacy.

DSG Retail Ltd fined £500,000 for not securing over 14 million customers' information as a result of a cyber attack. Malware was installed on 5,390 of DSG's Currys PC World and Dixons Travel Stores between 2017 and 2018. It took 9 months for the cyber attack to be found.

5.6 million payment card details used in transactions and personal information, including full names, postcodes, email addresses and failed credit checks from their servers, of approximately 14 million customers

This is the second fine to DSG Retail Ltd, the ICO fined Carphone Warehouse in 2018, which is part of the same group.

With number of cyberattacks climbing, having a cyber insurance with the appropriate coverage can make a difference between a company surviving an incident and shutting down because of it.
