Is It Time to Abandon Passwords for Passkeys?

Passwords have been the backbone of online security for decades - but the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) says it’s time to move on. Their new guidance encourages everyone to start using passkeys wherever possible.

💡 What Are Passkeys?
Passkeys are a new, more secure way to log in without needing to remember (or reuse) passwords. They use cryptography built into your device - like Face ID, Touch ID, or fingerprint unlock - to verify it’s really you, each passkey is:
• Unique to each website or app
• Stored securely on your device
• Phishing resistant
• Impossible to guess or reuse

🧠 How They Work
Instead of typing a password, your device creates a secure key pair:
• One key stays on your device
• One key stays with the service you’re logging into Your device then confirms your identity using biometrics or a PIN - but never shares that sensitive info.

⚠️ Not Perfect (Yet)
Passkeys aren’t supported everywhere, and losing access to your device can be inconvenient. Where passkeys aren’t available, the NCSC still recommends:
• Using a password manager
• Enabling multi factor authentication
