Wetherby Screenprint

Wetherby Screenprint Your Brand, Printed. Our next move was to begin offering vehicle graphics.

Our journey began in 1985, operating out of a small space at the end of a unit we were able to rent from a former employer; the company that sparked our interest in screen printing. We quickly found our feet in the sign writing world, already having a couple of year’s experience working for other companies in the local area. We took great pride in not having to advertise, relying only on word of m

outh and recommendations; we still get much of our work this way today. After all, we already had all the equipment; the vinyl plotter, the computers and software. We spent the next couple of years focusing on these two branches of Wetherby Screenprint, consolidating and expanding our knowledge whilst gaining valuable experience. Since that time there have been several new premises and a few more branches to our little adventure, taking on garment print and pad print.

People always seem fascinated by how screen print actually works, so here is a quick explainer from start to finish!

Let's start by explaining what a screen is. Screens are a fine mesh stretched over an aluminium frame. Exactly how fine the mesh is is determined by the amount of detail in the design, the substrate being printed on and how much ink we're looking to out down. We have choices from about 20 threads per cm, all the way up to 180 threads per cm!

The first process you can see is the coated screen being exposed to uv light. We keep the print area covered with a film to block the uv light. The uv light hardens the emulsion making it resistant to water and other solvents, we then wash out the print area with water.

Once dried it's time to get it set on the machine. The edges of the screen are masked out and adjustments are made to ensure the prints are aligned correctly.

At over 1100 stitches per minute it's crazy how these things don't simply implode!

Embroidery adds a perceived prestige over a print. Coupled with the face that items like fleeces can't be printed and it's easy to see why branded embroidered tops are so popular!

Screen print still can't be beaten. Perfectly flat, unable to be picked off and looks incredible.

We've finally done it! You probably know that we've been offering embroidery for a while now, you'll probably also know that we've been outsourcing it, but you won't know that last week we took delivery of our first of two new embroidery machines!!
