Some say air cooling may still be adequate in the UK?

But adequate doesn’t necessarily mean economical. Hot spells matter. High electricity costs matter every day!!!

👉 Cooling can account for up to 40% of a data centre’s total energy use. Even the UK Government cites immersion cooling as potentially reducing energy use compared with traditional air cooling.

👉 Higher-density infrastructure and AI workloads make heat removal more challenging regardless of the outside temperature.

👉 Hot-weather resilience is increasingly relevant. 2025 was the UK’s warmest year on record (2026 may be even hotter 🥵), while days exceeding 30°C have more than quadrupled around Greater London compared with 1961–1990.

👉 Fewer server fans and less reliance on large air-conditioning systems can mean less noise, a smaller footprint and lower cooling overhead.

We say liquid immersion cooling is not just for heatwaves; it’s for the year-round economics of running cloud infrastructure!

When temperatures rise, data centres don’t just consume more electricity - many also need more water.

As parts of the UK face temperatures in the mid-to-high 30s, almost three-quarters of England is now officially in drought.

That creates an important question:

How can we keep our digital infrastructure cool without placing even greater pressure on limited water supplies?

Many traditional data centres use evaporative or water-assisted cooling to remove heat from servers. During a heatwave, cooling demand can increase at precisely the time when water resources are under the greatest strain.

It’s an uncomfortable contradiction - businesses need reliable digital services, while communities, agriculture and the environment need us to conserve water.

During periods of extreme heat, data centre operators should be closely monitoring:

✅ Equipment and facility temperatures
✅ Water availability and consumption
✅ Grid, UPS and backup power capacity
✅ Cooling efficiency and humidity levels
✅ Alerts, redundancy and failover systems

This is where liquid immersion cooling offers a different approach.

By submerging servers and storage equipment in a non-conductive dielectric fluid, heat is removed directly from the components. This helps maintain stable operating temperatures while significantly reducing reliance on energy - and water-intensive cooling systems.

At PeaSoup, single-phase liquid immersion cooling is already part of how we deliver sovereign, sustainable and resilient UK cloud services.

Data centre resilience can no longer be measured by uptime alone. We also need to consider how responsibly our infrastructure uses energy and water - especially as heatwaves and droughts become more common.

Why submerge traditional hard drives in liquid instead of following the traditional path of using SSD drives to deploy S3-compatible storage services?

👉 We did this for much greater data resilience, cost-effectiveness and sustainability – all without paying a premium price tag.

The liquid immersion setup provides:

✅ Reduced energy consumption
✅ Enhanced longevity and reliability
✅ Eliminated HVAC dependency
✅ Improved performance consistency, even under heavy workloads
✅ Approx 4.3 kg CO₂e per TB/year only (compared with typical enterprise/public cloud storage of 8–30 kg CO₂e)

Why are companies like moving critical systems away from US cloud providers?

According to a recent Irish Times article, the answer isn't speed or cost.

It's data sovereignty.

More organisations are recognising that it's no longer enough to know where your data is stored.

You also need to know which country's laws apply to it.

As regulations evolve and cyber risks increase, businesses are taking a closer look at:

✅ Who owns their cloud provider
✅ Which legal jurisdiction governs their data
✅ Whether they have a viable alternative if circumstances change

For UK organisations, data sovereignty is becoming an important part of cloud strategy - not just for compliance, but for resilience and long-term control.

At PeaSoup, we believe businesses should have confidence that their critical data remains under UK jurisdiction and protected by UK legal frameworks.

The cloud isn't just about storage anymore.

It's about control.

Liquid immersion cooling technology isn't just "cooler" - it removes whole categories of infrastructure associated with air cooling.

Compared with traditional air cooling methods in data centres, immersion systems reduce the need for fans, large air-handling equipment, and associated floor space while supporting much higher power densities.

Air-cooled DC
👉 High cooling costs
👉 Lower rack density
👉 Large plant rooms
👉 Loud environment
👉 Higher energy overhead
👉 High water consumption
👉 Higher cost per VM

Immersion Cooling
✅ Lower operating costs overall
✅ Higher compute density
✅ Compact and simple deployment
✅ No noise pollution
✅ No water consumption
✅ Low PUE
✅ More competitive cloud pricing

Not all S3 storage is the same!

Where your data lives and how it’s stored matter a lot...

If you're looking for cloud storage, here are some questions to answer:

✅ Is it hosted entirely in the UK
✅ Is it compliant with UK & EU jurisdictions
✅ Does it have built-in encryption and object lock
✅ Is egress/ingress free of charge
✅ Is the pricing predictable
✅ Is it really 100% sustainable

S3 can be used for almost everything - from backup and archive to M365 protection, NAS extension, and compliance-driven retention. But if your data is sensitive, your top priority should be sovereignty!

Another UK heatwave is here – but what does that mean for the cloud services we all rely on?

As temperatures rise across the UK, data centres face increasing pressure to keep critical IT systems running efficiently and reliably.

Traditional cooling systems have to work much harder during periods of extreme heat, leading to higher energy use and greater strain on infrastructure.

That's why innovative technologies like liquid immersion cooling are becoming so important.

With heatwaves becoming more frequent, investing in resilient and sustainable technology isn't just good for the environment—it's good for business too.

At PeaSoup, we've been using liquid immersion cooling to help build a more efficient and sustainable cloud platform for our customers.

👉 A greener approach.
👉 Greater efficiency.
👉 Better resilience.
👉 No water consumption.
