A customer judged my whole business in nine seconds.
That's how long it took my phone to ring out. Nine seconds. In that time they decided I was closed, slow, or gone, and dialed the next name on the list.
I was in the garden with the twins when it rang. Saw the missed call an hour later, rang back, straight to their voicemail.
They'd already booked someone else.
Here's what stuck with me... the person they booked probably wasn't better. They just answered.
Twenty years in financial services taught me that spending on leads is pointless if the answering part is broken. I spent a lot of money learning that slowly.
Because locally, responsiveness IS the reputation. Reviews matter, referrals matter, but the first real test a new customer runs is a ringing phone. Pass that test and you're the reliable one in town. Fail it and all that skill never gets a chance to show.
The uncomfortable part is that being busy serving customers is exactly what makes the phone go unanswered. Good work causing lost work.
If your phone rang right now, mid-job, mid-school-run... what would the caller decide about you in those nine seconds?
