Most briefs that land on our desk open with the same line: "we need a new logo."

Nine times out of ten, that's not actually the problem.

When we run a brief through our Diagnose stage (the D in our d.e.p.i.c.t framework), the visual stuff is usually just a symptom. The real gap sits underneath. Who are you? Who are you for? What do you actually stand for? A shiny new logo on top of a fuzzy proposition still looks fuzzy.

The clients who get the most out of working with us are the ones willing to pause on "what should our logo look like" and sit with "who are we and who is this for" first. When we get that right, the design work that follows has roots. It lands. It means something.

So if you're about to commission brand work, our honest advice: don't start with the logo. Start with the strategy. The logo gets a whole lot easier after that.

Happy to chat it through if you're at that crossroads. No hard sell, just a proper conversation πŸ™‚

Schools come to us asking for a new logo. We almost always end up doing something much bigger.

A logo swap on its own doesn't change how a school feels. Parents still pick up the same tired prospectus. Students still walk past the same corridors. Staff still send emails with mismatched branding. Nothing actually shifts.

The rebrands that land are the ones where the new identity shows up everywhere. Website. Prospectus. Signage. Wall art. Wayfinding. Uniform. Social. All of it pulling in the same direction.

We saw this with Aldersley High School. The leadership team wanted a brand their students could be proud of, so Depict Creative didn't stop at a mark and a colour palette. We took it through printed literature, environmental graphics, digital comms and the physical spaces students actually spend their days in.

That's when staff and students start to notice. That's when prospective parents feel a difference on open evening. That's when a rebrand does what it's supposed to do.

If you're a head or a marketing lead thinking about a refresh, our honest advice: plan for the whole thing, or wait until you can. A new logo on its own won't move the needle.

Happy to chat it through if it's on your radar for the next academic year πŸ™‚

Most websites lose visitors in the first 10 seconds. And the reason is almost never the design.

It's something we call Journey Friction. The invisible resistance that stops people from taking the next step.

A visitor doesn't leave because your site looks bad. They leave because they got lost. They couldn't tell in three seconds what you actually do. Or they scrolled past three sections hunting for a phone number that should've been at the top.

So before we design a single pixel, the Depict Creative team maps the entry points, the drop-off zones and the paths people actually take. Pretty comes later. Clarity comes first.

Most websites don't fail because they look wrong. They fail because nobody planned them properly.

Before we write a single line of code, we take clients through five stages most of them never even see:

1. Identify the journey. Where do people land, what do they need, where do they drop off?
2. Sitemap and wireframing. The blueprint. Structure gets agreed before anything pretty happens.
3. Visualisation and prototyping. Now the colour, type and imagery come in.
4. Build. The stage everyone thinks is the whole job.
5. Testing. Because launching isn't finishing.

Skip stages 1 and 2 and you get what Nick calls expensive wallpaper. A site that looks lovely and converts nobody.

Great websites get designed twice. Once in planning, once in pixels.

Aldersley High School didn't come to us for a new logo. They came because students weren't feeling proud of their school.

That's a very different design brief.

A logo on its own can't change how a 14-year-old feels walking through the gates on Monday morning. What can? A brand that shows up consistently. On the walls. In the prospectus. On the signage. In the way staff talk about the place.

We pulled together the full carousel below with the lessons from this project. Handy if you're a school (or any institution) thinking about a refresh and wondering what actually shifts beyond the visuals.

Most agencies hand you an account manager. Depict hands you the people actually doing the work.

When you work with us, there's no middle layer. No project coordinator relaying your feedback. No junior passing notes to a senior who passes notes to a designer.

It's just two of us. Helen runs design and operations. Nick handles creative direction. That's the whole team.

So when you email about your logo, the person reading it is the same person drawing it. When you ring up with a last-minute change, you're talking to the person who'll actually make the change.

Small on purpose. It keeps the work sharp and the relationships real πŸ™‚

If you've ever felt like a ticket number at an agency, you probably weren't imagining it. Come and be a name instead.

Most people think a website starts with picking colours and fonts.

It doesn't. Not at Depict Creative, anyway.

Before Nick opens a design tool, he's already mapped the sitemap, sketched the wireframes, and worked out where visitors will land, click, and (hopefully not) drop off. That's the bit clients rarely see, but it's the bit that decides whether the site actually works.

A pretty website that confuses people is just expensive wallpaper.

Here's how our 5-stage build works:

>> Sitemap
>> Wireframe
>> Visualisation
>> Build
>> Test

Design is the last thing we do. Strategy is the first.

Most website briefs we get start with colours, pages, and features.

That's not wrong. It's just not the start.

When a client hands us a brief, it usually describes how the site should look. Rarely does it describe what the site actually needs to do. Where visitors come from. What they're trying to find. Where they give up and click away.

None of that shows up in a brief about homepage sliders and brand colours.

So we start somewhere different. Before any design work, we map the journey. Entry points. Drop-off points. The path from "just landed here" to "just made an enquiry."

Once you map that out, the whole site changes. Sometimes dramatically. Pages get merged. Menus get rewritten. The homepage stops being a shop window and starts being a signpost. And it starts generating actual enquiries, not just compliments.

If you're a business owner or marketing manager in Wolverhampton or the wider West Midlands thinking about a redesign, the most useful thing you can do before writing a brief is answer one question: what do you want a visitor to do, and what's stopping them?

Start there. The colours can wait πŸ™‚

The prospectus looks brilliant. The corridor tells a different story.

That's where most school brands quietly fall apart.

Schools pour budget into one flagship piece. Usually the prospectus. Sometimes the website. Then every other touchpoint gets left to chance. Signage, wall displays, social graphics, window vinyls, the reception area. Prospective parents notice the gaps long before staff do.

Your brand isn't a brochure. It lives in the building. In the corridors students walk every day, in the artwork on the walls, in the little details that either back up what the prospectus promises or quietly contradict it.

A joined-up school brand doesn't stop at the front door.

Have a look at how we think about it πŸ‘‡

Cookie (our office dog) says:

Most businesses treat brand strategy as a finishing touch. Something they bolt on once the logo looks good.

We see it all the time. A business owner comes to us with a beautiful, shiny new logo. It looks brilliant. But when we ask who they're actually talking to, why they're different, or what their message is, the room goes quiet.

Sorting out a visual identity before your strategy is like picking wallpaper before you've built the walls. It looks nice for a minute, but it won't hold up.

Your strategy should always come first and shape the visual identity. It's not there to decorate a pretty design after the fact.

When we run a strategy session, we strip things right back to the foundations:

- Finding your actual target audience (not just who you hope they are)
- Figuring out your exact positioning in the market
- Defining a clear, human tone of voice
- Shaping messaging that actually connects

Got a fresh logo but feel like you're building on sand? It's never too late to put the real foundations in place. And if you're just starting out, do yourself a massive favour. Work out what you want to say before you decide what colour to paint it. πŸ™‚
