‘I’m good with technology and love the idea that tech is one of the key things that sets humans apart from virtually every other creature.’
Geoff explains that whilst animals use tools in the natural world, they learn how to use what is presented to them, they don’t look for ways to improve and develop those tools. They don’t develop their learning.
‘I love the idea that technology makes you more than you are. People can travel further, talk over greater distances and build bigger things, whereas the rest of the animal kingdom can’t.’
This blog aims to share some of the personality and drive behind Flex IT – please be introduced to Geoff; One-time IT Support Engineer, Technical Director and now Managing Director of Flex IT after 16 years with the company…

‘I started off life after university with my Chemical Physics degree by going into laser technology as a physicist. I was using my skills to develop technology that helped people protect themselves. From there I shifted around quite a lot before finding IT, including jobs in automation and software development. I was made redundant at the same time as a friend on the project we were working on together and so came up with the idea of starting a business in IT.
‘We parted ways and the role of junior at Flex IT came up.
‘I had a fairly good grounding in IT but despite my previous experience I didn’t have the skills necessary to take on a role higher up – I knew I had a lot more to learn and was content to do that under the Flex IT team. Those two people that took me on were the two original founders and so I was comfortable being the junior.
‘I stuck with it and worked my way up to now find myself in the hot seat, as it were.
‘At the same time as learning my role, I discovered it was always going to be about finding ways to make technology make people better. That’s the essence of how I feel Flex delivers – improving productivity, helping our clients do whatever job they’re trying to do – but better.
‘Because at the end of the day, if you’re going to do something, you might as well exploit the tools that help you do it well.’
𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗜𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗙𝗹𝗲𝘅-𝗶𝗻𝗴…
‘Outside of Flex IT, there are two main things I enjoy…
‘Board games, and games in general really – it’s the kind of competitive side of me, but in a controlled way. Most games are very much about processing, which taps into my analytical brain. Games like Risk, Chess, Diplomacy and others you’ve probably never heard of.
‘And the other thing is dance – which is interesting because although there is a framework of rules, within this framework you’re free to express yourself and develop your own style. I’m very music driven in how I dance, some people do lots of big lifts or acrobatic stuff, and I’m much less showy and just try to feel the music.
‘Whilst it’s a very expressive pastime you might be surprised how many technical people make good dancers! The appeal to me is having that framework and being able to fill in the blanks. I’m by no means a competition dancer, that would be a framework too far – I don’t dance for judges, I dance for me and my partner.’
‘At the end of the day, whether through code, board games, or dance, I love finding frameworks that help people perform at their best.
‘If you enjoy talking tech, productivity, or strategic problem-solving (or have a board game recommendation), I’d love to connect with you on LinkedIn.’
