What's the difference between USB 2.0, 3.0 and 3.1?

Strictly speaking, USB 2.0, 3.0 and 3.1 aren't physical ports they are methods of transmitting data and delivering power. Each is faster than its predecessor. USB 2.0 offers theoretical speeds of up to 480Mbps, USB 3.0 up to 5Gbps and USB 3.1 up to 10Gbps.

The Home Assistant....

What does it do?

Smart speakers like Google Home and Amazon Echo listen for you speaking to them and access remote voice services to either speak back an answer or act on your command.

Why would I want it?

If you want to know what time a film is on at the local cinema, just ask. Run out of kitchen roll again? Place an order. You can check the time, weather or traffic, play and pause music and set calendar reminders. I you've installed smart lightbulbs, you can ask to turn them up or down. It's like having Jeeves in a can.

What's the catch?

These boxes listen all the time, and as soon as they think your talking to them they start recording everything they hear. If that's not giving you a slightly creepy feeling, you may not have been paying much attention to the way personal data is being used by Tech companies to build marketing profiles and how it can end up in the wrong hands.

So can I do without it?

Yes: the voice assistant on your smartphone already has similar features. But smart speakers are proving popular because of their sheer convenience. If you decide you'd rather not have one, remember that people you visit may do.......

"Wine is constant proof that God loves us and loves to see us happy." - Benjamin Franklin quotes from BrainyQuote.com

Three years ago we went into meltdown in the 12 month leading up to the end of life of Windows XP. The one year migration campaign was awash with security warnings from Microsoft itself, as well as migration specialists.
Now it seems the migration campaign is starting up again, for Windows 7 this time. The OS is due to reach the end of life in 2020 - less than three years away.

Quote of the day!!

"Computer games don't affect kids; I mean if PAC-MAN affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music"

Don't panic, be aware of Scareware:

Scareware is a type of malware that is trying to trick the user into purchasing unnecessary, useless or potentially dangerous software.
While using your computer a pop-up message appears, often looking like a Windows system message, which purports to be antivirus software or something similar. The message always contains a warning, that your computer is infected with viruses or any other security risks.
In reality, no problems were found but the suggested software is the actual malware which can harm your computer, cause costly repairs or lead to identity or data theft.
What scareware can look like:
• You may get ads that promise to "delete viruses or spyware," "protect privacy," "improve computer function," "remove harmful files," or "clean your registry;"
• you may get "alerts" about "malicious software" or "illegal po*******hy on your computer;"
• you may be invited to download free software for a security scan or to improve your system;
• you could get pop-ups that claim your security software is out-of-date and your computer is in immediate danger;
• you may suddenly encounter an unfamiliar website that claims to have performed a security scan and prompts you to download new software.
But what can we do?
If you are faced with a usual warning, first of all shut down your internet browser. Don’t click on anything in the pop-up windows, such as ‘No’, ‘X’ or even ‘Cancel’ as this already can activate the program.
You can also press CTRL+Alt+Delete to open the task manager and click on ‘End Task’.
A good Antivirus Software can support protecting you as well.
