Hey there, parents and guardians! Are you ready to embark on a journey of digital wellbeing for your children? Let's begin with some simple steps to ensure a healthy relationship between your child and their smart devices. I will begin today by introducing Google Family Link.
Step 1: Set Up Google Family Link
Install the Google Family Link app on your own device and your child's smartphone.
Follow the on-screen instructions to create a Family Link account for your child.
Connect your child's device to your Family Link account by signing in with their Google account credentials.
Step 2: Customize App Permissions
Open the Family Link app on your device.
Select your child's profile and tap "Manage settings."
Choose "Apps" and review the list of installed applications.
Decide which apps your child should have access to, and adjust the permissions accordingly.
You can also set daily time limits for specific apps to encourage healthy usage habits.
Step 3: Set Content Filters
In the Family Link app, go to your child's profile and tap "Manage settings."
Select "Filters on Google Chrome" or "Google Play filters," depending on your child's browsing habits.
Enable SafeSearch in Google Chrome to prevent explicit content from appearing in search results.
Adjust content filters for Google Play to limit access to age-appropriate apps, games, and media.
Step 4: Manage Screen Time
Open the Family Link app and choose your child's profile.
Tap "Manage settings" and select "Screen time" to set usage limits.
Define a schedule for when the device can be used, such as bedtime or during school hours.
Specify the maximum amount of time your child can spend on their device each day.
Google will automatically enforce the time limits, and your child's device will lock when the allotted time is up.
Step 5: Approve and Monitor App Downloads
Open the Family Link app and select your child's profile.
Tap "Manage settings" and choose "Google Play settings."
Activate "Parental approvals" to receive notifications whenever your child wants to download an app.
Review each app request and grant or deny permission based on its suitability for your child.
