🔧 What do you do when you need to work on a design or simulation project, but the is missing?
The drawings may be lost or outdated. Modifications made over the years may never have been documented. And the component you need to analyse or redesign may exist only in the real world.

A 3D scan can capture its current shape. But that leaves another question:
What do you do with a point cloud or an STL file?
In this tutorial, we explore that challenge using a ship propeller as our example. Our colleague Georgios Tzanakis, Design & Simulation Engineer, shows how Siemens Digital Industries Software - Designcenter NX can turn scan data into a detailed, usable solid model.

The workflow covers how to:
✅ Import scan data and process it as a hybrid Convergent Model
✅ Work with mesh facets and analytical surfaces in the same model
✅ Isolate regions, smooth scan noise and remove distorted geometry
✅ Define the propeller’s rotation axis from the hub
✅ Reconstruct damaged areas by patterning intact blade surfaces
✅ Create splines on the scan and generate precise surfaces
✅ Check surface transitions for G1 or G2 continuity
✅ Sew the surfaces into a closed solid body

By the end, degraded scan data has become a fully surfaced solid model—a starting point for further design, analysis, optimization and manufacturing documentation.

Watch the tutorial to see how FEAC Engineering the process in action.

How do you take complex surface geometry and turn it into a complete, refined product design?

In the second part of our two-part tutorial series, FEAC Engineering colleague Mr. Odysseas Perantzakis (CAD & CAE Engineer), continues the step-by-step development of a spray bottle using Siemens Digital Industries Software – 𝐍𝐗 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫, focusing on the refinement, integration, and completion of the product’s key surfaces.

🔹 Handle Surface Refinement – Completing and smoothing the complex handle geometry
🔹 Surface Integration – Connecting and blending the handle with the main bottle body
🔹 Bottle Neck Development – Creating the upper geometry and refining the transition to the bottle body
🔹 Final Geometry Refinement – Ensuring a coherent, ergonomic, and manufacturable product form

By the end of Part 2, the spray bottle is brought together as a 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞 𝟑𝐃 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥, demonstrating how advanced surface modeling techniques in 𝐍𝐗 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 can be used to develop complex and ergonomic product geometries.
