As part of our 35th anniversary celebration, we're looking back at some of our favorite customer projects that showcase the creativity and engineering excellence of the AXISVM community around the world.

Today, we highlight the remarkable Library and Learning Centre at the University of Economics Vienna, completed in 2013.

Designed by the renowned Zaha Hadid Architects, the 28,000 m² building rises as a striking polygonal form at the heart of the university campus. Its dynamic architecture is defined by flowing interior spaces, bridges, and corridors that create seamless connections between different levels, while the contrasting shell-and-shadow exterior gives the building its iconic appearance.

The structural design was carried out by Vasko + Partner Ingenieure together with Trombitás és Zoltai Engineering, transforming this ambitious architectural vision into reality.

Projects like this remind us why we are proud to support engineers across different countries and disciplines. Thank you for being part of our 35-year journey.

📌 Is it possible to model a trapezoidal composite steel deck slab as a one-way spanning slab in AXISVM?

When modelling composite steel deck slabs, there is often a need to approximate the structure as a one-way spanning slab.

❓ Why is the load-bearing behaviour not purely one-way?

Although the steel deck ribs provide significant bending stiffness in one direction, the concrete topping is also capable of transferring loads in the transverse direction.

The thicker the concrete topping is compared to the deck profile height, the more pronounced the two-way load-bearing behaviour becomes.

👉 How can one-way behaviour be approximated?

One possible approach is to model the concrete topping as an orthotropic material. By reducing the modulus of elasticity in the secondary direction, the slab behaviour can be brought closer to that of a one-way spanning system.

The advantage of this approach is that reinforcement design results can still be obtained from the model.

💡 How significant is the effect of the modelling approach?

The example below shows the bending moment results of the supporting structure for different modelling assumptions.

The slab model can significantly influence not only the behaviour of the slab itself, but also the internal forces and design results of the supporting structure. Therefore, selecting the appropriate modelling approach is always an engineering decision.

This year, we are proud to celebrate 35 years of supporting structural engineers around the world.

Over the past three and a half decades, AXISVM has been used in the design and verification of countless projects—from residential and commercial buildings to industrial facilities, bridges, towers, and other complex structures. What makes us especially proud is that behind every project stands a dedicated engineer who trusted AXISVM as part of their work.

As we celebrate this milestone, we are also looking ahead. This year marks the beginning of a new chapter as we start incorporating the Second Generation of Eurocodes into AXISVM, helping engineers prepare for the next chapter of structural design standards.

To commemorate our 35th anniversary, we will be sharing a selection of reference projects from our archives, showcasing how AXISVM has helped engineers across different countries, industries, and engineering disciplines. These projects reflect not only the versatility of the software, but also the creativity and expertise of the professionals who use it every day.

Thank you for being part of our journey. Your feedback, trust, and support have helped shape AXISVM into what it is today.

When analysing foundation slabs, one common question is whether the software can simulate uplift, where part of the slab loses contact with the soil and only compressive soil reactions are transferred.

The answer is yes – but a nonlinear analysis is required.

The process is simple:
🔺 Open the nonlinear analysis dialog
🔺 Enable nonlinear material behaviour
🔺 Run the analysis
🔺 The program automatically deactivates soil contact where uplift occurs

Unlike linear analysis, where the soil contact transfers both compression and tension, the nonlinear model only transfers compressive soil reactions. This allows AXISVM to realistically simulate partial loss of contact and foundation uplift.

A useful tool whenever uplift or separation between the soil and structure may influence the design.

Az AXISVM akadémiai programja keretében meghirdetjük konferencia-cikk pályázatunkat, amelynek célja a fiatal kutatók szakmai fejlődésének támogatása.

📢 Akár 750 EUR támogatás nyerhető hazai vagy nemzetközi tudományos konferencián való részvételhez, utazási vagy szállásköltségek finanszírozására.

Pályázhatnak:
✔ aktív PhD vagy DLA hallgatók
✔ 35 év alatti, tudományos fokozattal rendelkező fiatal kutatók

A pályázat keretében olyan kutatási munkákat várunk, amelyekben az AXISVM statikai programrendszert alkalmazták végeselemes analízis vagy szerkezetméretezés céljából.

📄 In larger models, a single load case may contain numerous nodal loads and surface loads, which can make the clear overview and documentation of the individual loads more difficult, if everything should be shown in one drawing.

💡 Let’s see what we can do!

Among the various settings, we have several options for adjusting the appearance of graphical symbols and labels.

Line Thickness/Size and Color of Load Symbols, Labels:
1️⃣ Preferences → Graphical Symbols → Loads; Labels
Load symbol display factors (overall size):

2️⃣ Model Options→ Drawing
In this case, the display and labeling of surface loads have been significantly reduced. By configuring color coding, the interpretation of these loads also becomes much clearer again.

👉 In addition, the transparency of labels can also be adjusted.

💡 Support Friday: Why do “unselected” loads change as well?

We recieved a question where customers experience that when modifying concentrated loads placed on beam elements, other loads on the same beam also appear to change, even though they were not explicitly selected.

At first glance, this may seem unexpected — but it is actually the result of a deliberate program behavior.

📌 What is happening?
If the beam element itself is selected together with the loads, the software treats this as a selection of all nodal loads located on that beam. As a result, all of them are modified — regardless of whether each individual load was explicitly selected.

⚙️ Why is it designed this way?
This behavior was introduced to simplify the modeling workflow. With a single selection, users can efficiently modify all loads on a given beam element at once, saving time and reducing repetitive actions.

✏️ Can loads be modified individually?
Yes. If you need to modify loads one by one, you can do so by ensuring that the beam element itself is not selected. In this case, only the explicitly selected loads will be affected.
