** STORM ADVISORY - Electronic Equipment **
We’re taking the threat and potential impact of storm Éowyn seriously in regards to essential computer equipment and electronics.
As has happened in recent storms, we’ve had customers impacted and equipment damaged. (Some beyond repair)
If power goes out or is intermittent, it’s the “potential” surge when it comes back is where the damage can occur.
Were advising all business customers before they leave their premises this evening to do the following:
• Switch off AND unplug all computers, servers, network equipment before they finish for the evening.
Broadband:
• Switch off routers and if using new Fibre, switch off and unplug the white fibre box beside the router. The plug transformers that power these devices aren’t designed to take a large hit if a surge happens.
Keep in mind, if a large percentage of broadband customers have damage, replacement power supplies or routers may be in short supply for weeks.
General:
• Unplug network devices, printers, monitors, TVs and even sky boxes to minimise the risk to your equipment.
(We’ve seen situations where large surges have still damaged equipment that has been plugged in even though the wall sockets have been switched off)
• Charge your phones, iPads, tablets, power banks etc. in advance just in case there are power outages.
• If you forget to charge, see if you can charge phones via the cigarette lighter socket in your car if you have an adapter.
All of the above should be prioritised both in work and home. Better to prevent rather than having to cure.
