Buffering… ⏳
Payroll automation appears to be at an important checkpoint.
We recently asked: What percentage of your payroll process is automated today? ⚙️
0–25% — 24%
25–50% — 44%
50–75% — 24%
75–100% — 8%
It’s encouraging to see more payroll teams moving past the halfway point, with a growing number now operating at higher levels of automation or even approaching full end-to-end adoption.
At the same time, more than two-thirds of organizations are still in the early stages of automating their payroll... And this is also worth applauding! 👏
The first steps of automation can be crucial and challenging, but often deliver the most visible gains through targeted efficiencies, task-level improvements, and quick operational wins that build momentum early.
Moving beyond that stage is where the complexity increases 😵💫
The jump from partial automation to a fully tech-enabled payroll function requires deeper integration, cleaner data flows, and broader organizational alignment. As a result, progress often slows here, as implementation clashes with existing systems, workflows, and dependencies that were not originally designed with modern technology in mind.
Moving past this stage requires a shift in focus from automating individual tasks to rethinking how systems, data, and processes connect across the entire payroll ecosystem. This is where modern payroll platforms can help by providing a more connected foundation for integration, standardization, and growth.
With the right foundations in place, organizations can move beyond the intitial plateau and continue building an automated payroll environment at their own pace.
The goal isn't to rush to 100%. It's to make sure the progress bar keeps moving!
