At Apridata we get excited about taking on new challenges with our Customers, so it was only natural that for our team offsite we push ourselves out of the comfort zone! We had a fantastic sail up the Atlantic coast from Rosses Point, Sligo to Teelin, Donegal near the Sliabh League Cliffs and back, with plenty of wind, rolling Atlantic swells and a few dolphins to encourage us! A great team and a memorable experience. Thanks to Dave O'Connor at Wild West Sailing for facilitating the trip.

More and more options are being made available to physical retail stores to give them similar levels of insight that their online peers enjoy. The price point of these solutions are coming down considerably enabling smaller retailers to compete.

It's turning out to be a notable week in the IoT world. Amazon announced their IoT platform today. Microsoft, IBM and Amazon now all have substantial offerings. The physical world is about to get very connected in the next five years.

Businesses of all types and size need to start thinking how this is going to impact them and innovate.

Panel discussion on the state of the Internet of Things (IoT, where more and more devices connect to the internet) at the quarterly Wearable Wednesday event in Qualtrics EMEA office in Dublin. This was a panel discussion with Antoly Lebedev (Cesanta), Connall Laverty (wia.io), Jason Ruane (cirkit.io) and Ken Finnegan (IDA Ireland).

It was clear from the discussion that IoT is in its nascent stage in Ireland. Ken Finnegan outlined the IDA's efforts to join all the disjointed activities in the IoT ecosystem in Ireland (research, startups, etc.) into a cohesive message to attract foreign direct investment in this space.

It would have been interesting to hear the perspective from industry players who have applied IoT to understand the clear benefits it has delivered and the challenges faced.

Although nascent in Ireland, there is no question IoT will continue to have a significant impact on the way we live and the way we do business.

"How data will transform business" A TED talk from November 2013 by Philip Evans, Boston Consulting. Traditional business models and their strategies are being disrupted by the exponential growth in data. Transaction costs are plummeting and scale is polarising which gives rise to industries that are moving from vertically integrated supply chains to horizontal structures. In this world current business strategy modesls are obsolete.

Almost 2 years from this talk, there is certainly clear evidence of these new types of business institutions dominating that are scaling horizontally (Airbnb is a classic example)

What does the future of business look like? In an informative talk, Philip Evans gives a quick primer on two long-standing theories in strategy -- and explains why he thinks they are essentially invalid.

Do you see this becoming a reality? It takes the smart fridge concept of the late 1990s (which never took on) to another level. We are not convinced it's the best example of the potential for the Internet of Things (IoT) but it does highlight whats now technically possible.
