What Does The Full Fibre Broadband Rollout Mean For Businesses?

Openreach which runs the UK's digital telephone and internet network recently reported that broadband use more than doubled over the past two years due to an increase in remote working, schooling and socialising. With an increase reliance on the internet it's imperative that businesses secure their internet connection to avoid any future disruptions.

There are three ways that a broadband provider might connect your business to the internet. The oldest connection type is (ADSL) broadband using copper wires from the PSTN telephone line. While ADSL coverage is available in most parts of the UK, the download speeds can be very slow with the national average being 11 megabits per second (mbps). These slow connection speeds often lead to frustration and troublesome connectivity issues for businesses.

The next level up is Fibre To Cabinet (FTTC) or what is also known as Superfast broadband. FTTC provides increased download speeds using fibreoptic cables which connect to cabinets in the street from the local telephone exchange.

Fibreoptic cables have a greater ability to transfer higher volumes of data at faster speeds, however FTTC is only part fibreoptic enabled with many local telephone exchanges still using copper wiring from the streets to transmit signals. The copper wire network has been in place since the 1800s and constantly requires maintenance work carried out by Openreach with regular new parts being fitted to maintain the system. This often damages the connectivity of broadband for many businesses creating reliability issues.

What's The Solution?

With proof that FTTP Fibreoptic broadband can provide download speeds of up to 900 mbs which is 80 x times faster than ADSL. Openreach has pledged to offer 25 million homes and businesses by December 2026. Once 75% of an area has been connected up to an FTTP connection the copper ADSL network will be shut down. From April 2023 it will not be possible for businesses to purchase a new copper connection and it is vitally important that businesses make the switch to FTTP sooner rather than later to avoid disruption to their business.

Research has shown that full fibre rollout could improve national productivity by £59 billion, reduce carbon emissions by 700,000 tonnes and bring over 1 million people back into the workforce.

Card-acquiring services are crucial to the UK economy as they enable merchants, like newsagents, restaurants and grocery stores, to accept card payments from customers. This means, every day, people can pay for the goods and services they need by card. With UK credit and debit card payments totalling £884 billion, it’s important these services work well for everyone.

Earlier this year, the (PSR) Payment Systems Regulator consulted on four potential remedies to address concerns identified in its card-acquiring market review, which found the market doesn’t work particularly well for merchants with annual card turnover below £50 million. Following all the responses the regulator received and engagement with stakeholders, the PSR is proposing three remedies:

Greater Transparency:
Summary boxes containing bespoke key price and non-price information for every merchant which can be used alongside new online quotation tools to help merchants compare prices and other service features more efficiently.

Greater Engagement:
Trigger messages will be sent from providers to merchants to prompt them to shop around, re-negotiate their contract or switch to get the best deal they can.

The Ability to Change Providers Easily:
Contractual limits will be placed on Point of Sale (POS) terminal contracts, so merchants are not discouraged from searching for and switching providers. These will be a maximum duration of 18 months on POS terminal lease and rental contracts, and maximum one month notice after any renewal.
