DATA is hosting our own Workers’ AI Counter-Summit this October 10th & 11th in CWU HQ. This will be an AI critical event in opposition to Ireland’s International AI Summit in October - we reject apocalyptic grand narratives of the tech giants and we refuse to accept that workers are passive victims of technology and the bosses that wield it in pursuit of their super profits.

Our work, our communities, our planet - our futures - are being stolen from us by the big tech robber barons. We want contributions from workers from all sectors - tech and beyond. As Ireland seeks to position itself as an open playing field for the AI giants, data centres, and semi-conductor companies, we believe creating space for dissenting voices and organised worker power is more vital than ever.

We want to hear how AI is impacting you and your community. We want to hear from workers, artists, academics, journalists, and activists who are standing up to big tech.

The counter summit - broadly running under a tagline of “Workers Against Slopaganda”, will take place across 1 full day and 1 half day on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th of October respectively in CWU HQ (William Norton House, 575 North Circular Road)

Contributions can be in the form of talks, workshops, art, music, poetry, film - as long as it’s human made and delivered! Email your proposal for a contributions over to [email protected]

If you don’t feel confident presenting a contribution in a formal way, shoot us an email and we’ll help flesh out your idea and see if it fits the event.

We aim to close the window for contributions in early-mid September.

Keep an eye out for the updates we’ll be dropping over the coming days and weeks

Redundancy is only the beginning.

New survey results from TikTok workers at risk of redundancy show deep concern about what comes next: financial insecurity, a weak jobs market, rising competition from layoffs across the tech sector, and the ability to afford housing.

As more tech companies cut jobs, workers are paying the price. Stronger redundancy protections, collective bargaining, and a real voice at work have never been more important.

Another Irish tech team is being cut.

Sedgwick is culling its Irish IT team and moving the work to an outsourced provider overseas. It's the latest example of skilled tech jobs being moved elsewhere while workers are left facing uncertainty.

This isn't an isolated case. Across the tech sector, workers are dealing with outsourcing, restructures and redundancies. That's why organising has never been more important.
Tech workers deserve secure jobs, meaningful consultation and a real voice at work.

Covalen has introduced new restrictions requiring workers to lock away their phones during shifts, with disciplinary action for breaches.

As CWU Deputy General Secretary Ian McArdle said, this is "a further tightening of the noose of control."

After years of layoffs and worsening conditions, workers deserve respect, fair treatment and a real voice at work, not ever tighter workplace controls.

These cuts are about more than jobs. They're about the future of online safety.

We're asking civil society organisations, trade unions, academics, researchers, politicians and public figures to support our open letter calling for greater scrutiny of TikTok's proposed restructuring.

📢 Sign the Open Letter in Support of Trust and Safety Workers at TikTok

DATA invites civil society organisations, trade unions, community leaders, public figures, academics, politicians, researchers, and everyone committed to online safety, digital rights, and platform accountability to sign our open letter in support of TikTok workers.

Trust and Safety workers are the frontline of keeping online spaces safe. Proposals to reduce TikTok's Trust and Safety operations in Dublin raise concerns not only for workers but for users, accountability, and online safety.

DATA is proud to support an open letter calling for transparency and urging TikTok to reconsider these cuts.

Another round of redundancies. Another reminder of why tech workers need to organise and unionise.

Concentrix has placed 85 Ireland-based workers supporting Meta at risk of redundancy as the company closes its Dublin escalation desk. This is the latest in a series of cuts affecting platform workers across the tech sector.

The Communications Workers’ Union (CWU), which is supporting affected employees at Concentrix, said it was “alarmed by members’ reports of how the current redundancies in Concentrix are being carried out and their potential impact on platform safety for the client Meta” and “The level of engagement with elected representatives falls well below even the low threshold we expect from tech companies.”

Online platforms rely on skilled workers to keep us all safe. Those workers deserve respect, meaningful consultation, and fair redundancy terms and not to be treated as disposable.

Around 300 TikTok jobs are now at risk as workers face another wave of uncertainty.

Johnny Guirke TD has warned that workers fear the consultation process is becoming little more than a "box-ticking exercise", with growing concerns about AI replacing jobs and the future of trust and safety work. He also commented on TikTok’s lack of interaction with trade unions.

Tech workers deserve meaningful consultation, secure employment, and respect at work—not decisions made behind closed doors.

When jobs are under threat, workers are stronger together. Join your union. Organise with your colleagues. Demand a better deal. Join DATA CWU today at datacwu.ie

Yesterday, members of the Digital and Techworker Alliance (DATA), a branch of the Communications Workers' Union, met with Labour Party representatives at the Dáil to discuss some of the key issues facing workers in Ireland's digital and tech sector.

The discussion focused on redundancies, the importance of collective bargaining, and the need for legislative reform to better protect workers. Members also highlighted the vital role trust and safety workers play in helping keep online platforms safe for everyone.
Ensuring workers' experiences are heard by policymakers is an important step towards building stronger workplace protections and a fairer future for digital and tech workers. Together, we're building a stronger voice for digital and tech workers.

The CWU at Biennial Delegate Conference passed an emergency motion that called on the Union to campaign alongside ICTU and affiliated unions for legislative and industrial advances that strengthen workers’ collective rights, improve living standards and deliver secure, quality employment.

Subsequently, ICTU and affiliates are calling for Budget 2027 to be a “workers' budget”, that includes:

🔸Double indexation of the income tax system in Budget 2027 to compensate workers the absence of a tax package for PAYE workers in Budget 2026.

🔸 A €1 increase in the National Minimum Wage from January 2027 to deliver the promised Living Wage for low paid workers.

🔸 Reductions in the cost of using essential public services, including reducing the cost of significant progress on delivering the promised €200 a month childcare.

🔸 An end to the payment cap freeze on pay-related jobseeker’s benefit and a timeline for introducing the promised pay-related parent’s benefit.

🔸 A second tier of child benefit for low-income families, in and out of work.

🔸Increased investment in public transport and green energy infrastructure, including targeted supports during winter where necessary.

The CWU has also reaffirmed that collective bargaining and worker solidarity are essential to achieving fair pay, decent work and social justice.

Commenting on the pre-Budget submission, Congress General Secretary Owen Reidy said:

"In recent years, time and again the Government has chosen costly short-term giveaways for those who shout the loudest. Workers have seen billions go towards VAT cuts and tax breaks that do little for them and little to secure their future, all while their pay packets have to stretch further and further. If the Government is serious about workers' living standards, and about the long-term health of the public finances, it has to end the gimmicks and give-aways, and invest in the workers that make this country run."
