Bus Éireann, Ireland's national bus company, began encouraging customers in Dublin and Letterkenny to return their plastic bottles and aluminum drink cans to our reverse vending machines in their bus stations one month ago.
Our Reverse vending machines help Ireland meet EU targets and promote a more circular economy by reducing single-use plastics.
Bus Éireann has fully committed to the upcoming deposit return scheme by launching the country's first reverse vending machine trial at Busáras and Letterkenny bus stations, with plans to expand the trial to other stations across the country. Bus Éireann was one of the first Irish transportation companies to install vending machines in their transportation hubs.
The cans and bottles are collected and recycled by Bus Eireann's waste contractor. It is hoped that the installation of reverse vending machines in Bus Éireann stations will assist the company in reaching a 70 percent recycling rate by 2030 as part of its overall sustainability strategy "Driving Change 2021-2030."
Sensi Ltd supplies the reverse vending machines, which can collect and store between 200 and 400 items at a time depending on the volume. The machines can accept PET plastic bottles up to two litres in volume and aluminum cans up to 500ml in volume.
