Can your dairy plant receive more milk without investing in additional infrastructure?

When transportation efficiency is discussed, the focus is often on what happens before a tanker reaches the plant.

But what happens after it arrives can have just as much impact.

Receiving constraints, unloading times, tanker arrival patterns and queueing can all reduce the efficiency of the wider transportation network.

Our Plant Intake & Capacity Review combines specialist dairy transportation expertise with the OptaHaul platform intelligence to analyse receiving operations, identify bottlenecks and assess practical receiving capacity.

The review helps dairy organisations to:

Understand where delays are occurring
Improve coordination between transportation and plant operations
Assess practical receiving capacity
Support future production growth with confidence

What's really driving your milk haulage costs?

When transportation costs increase, the first assumption is often that fuel prices or labour are to blame.

In our experience, the biggest opportunities can lie elsewhere.

Are hauler rate structures still aligned with today's network?
Have producer movements changed over time?
Are plants receiving milk from the most appropriate locations?
Is operational complexity adding unnecessary cost?

A Transportation Cost Review brings these factors together using operational data and the OptaHaul platform, helping dairy organisations understand not just what they spend, but why.

Ireland's greenhouse gas emissions are falling. That's good news.

But according to the EPA, they're not falling fast enough to hit our 2030 climate targets.

Milk transportation is one area where dairy cooperatives can make measurable improvements now.

Because milk collection is often outsourced, transport efficiency is too often treated as the haulier's problem.

It isn't.

Co-ops design the collection network. They decide where milk goes. They're best placed to cut unnecessary kilometres, fuel and emissions.

The most progressive Irish co-ops already get this. Dairygold, Dale Farm and Bandon Co-op are investing in technology to make their milk collection smarter and more sustainable.

Milk haulage alone won't solve dairy's emissions challenge.

But if we're serious about sustainability, it shouldn't be overlooked just because someone else is driving the truck.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has today published its provisional greenhouse gas emissions for Ireland for 2025.

The US dairy industry moves millions of loads every year. Small inefficiencies, repeated at that scale, can quickly become significant transportation costs.

Yet much of the software used to manage scheduling and dispatch still relies heavily on manual decision-making.

We believe dairy transportation teams should expect more.

Our latest article looks at why scheduling and dispatch needs a more modern, optimization-led approach.

A common misconception in the dairy industry is that software vendors should control access to data, or limit integration with other systems.

We disagree.

Your data should be yours. Modern software should make integration straightforward, not difficult.

When data is locked away in disconnected systems, it slows innovation and reduces the value dairy organisations can get from their technology investments.

The industry needs more openness, not less.

We explored this topic in one of our most-read articles:

Dairy Data Dilemma: Let’s talk about a hidden truth in the dairy industry: software that treats your data like a hostage.

A perfectly planned milk collection schedule can quickly unravel if plant intake capacity isn't taken into account.

As dairy supply chains become more complex, closer coordination between milk collection and plant intake is becoming increasingly important.

Kevin McSweeney shares his thoughts on the challenges, opportunities, and practical steps dairy organizations can take to improve alignment.

Happy World Milk Day!

Today we celebrate the dairy industry and the people who make it possible every day.

This year's focus on women farmers highlights the vital role women play across dairy farming, from managing herds and businesses to driving innovation and sustainability throughout the supply chain.

At OptaHaul, we're proud to support dairy producers, cooperatives, processors, and transport teams who work tirelessly to deliver fresh, high-quality milk from farm to plant.

Thank you to everyone who helps keep the dairy industry moving.

A lot of discussion around dairy supply chains focuses on processing capacity, inventory and commodity markets.

But transport operations are often where complexity shows up first.

Changing milk volumes.
Plant constraints.
Driver availability.
Last-minute schedule changes.
Pressure to reduce cost without impacting service.

These are operational challenges that require more than static planning tools.

At OptaHaul, we work with dairy processors and cooperatives to improve how milk movements are planned, scheduled and managed day to day - helping teams respond faster and operate more efficiently across complex networks.

The operational side of dairy logistics deserves better tools.
