Thank you to everyone who became a client of 2Funki Design this year.

Thank you to all the mentors and friends, family and support in so many ways so that I could start and sustain my own graphic design and branding business in its first year. I could not do it without you.

Serious business networking meeting with my lovely chapter BNI EMPIRE - Celbridge- and yes, I brought a Care Bear. I did a quick chat about blue, one of the most popular colours in logos but it also has connotations with sadness, and Grumpy Bear himself. The fact (on a dreary Friday) you might have the blues with your brand is something I can help with and bring the whole rainbow of design and brand experience.

What a start to a Monday.

It sounds unappealing at best and downright awful to some. The phrase came up when I speaking to my business network last week about the colour green and this phrase (and a book by Brian Tracy) came back into my head.
It's a technique to do the most difficult thing on your to-do list first thing on a Monday morning. The only way is up from there and is a useful productivity technique. Give it a go.

You have to tackle the difficult stuff or it will play on your mind and affect your ability to do your best work. That could be updating your website, posting about yourself on social media or finally admitting you need a specialist to come on board and rebrand your business so it is as professional and high-quality as the services you provide.

And now for something completely different. As well as a designer, I’m also an illustrator and artist and through a chance discussion on a social media platform, I was commissioned to create a custom illustration for a musician, Lone Ponderer, from the south-east of Ireland.

The brief was to create something based on black holes and event horizons, on a dark background with rings of colour or light. I had reference images from the client and I did some research myself, to fill up my internal visual references.

I popped on the musician, playing away in the background and I got loose sketching on the iPad. I eventually came to a concept incorporating the visuals around space and the silhouette of a guitar, which really resonated with the musician.

I'm navigating a world where being an introvert is not always championed. It's easy to be distracted by those who shout loudest or most often.

So here's to the quiet achievers. The busy bees. Listen harder.

Dip below the noise into the sound of good people, running their businesses and caring more about their clients than their social media profiles.

I love working with my clients to develop a brand - but it doesn't stop there. There's always the next event, a new sign, something for social. That's Brand Maintenance.
Here's a brand living its best life out in the wild. tommy_delaney_fitness attending (and competing in!) at Shine in Emo in May. Tommy needed to have professional flyers for the event and took his custom sign with him too.

I understand that design is confusing and mysterious to some. You might feel that your business isn't ready yet or you're not even sure what you might need and what impact it could have. So why risk it?

A conversation is free and might start a small reaction that leads to big changes. That's how my clients feel. I've got them to love their businesses even more after taking them through a design process. And now they get how design matters.

Inspiration and clarity come from the most unexpected places. I was listening to the man himself, Dermot Bannon (Dermot Bannon Architects) during a radio interview a couple of weeks ago and he said those words you hear from a client that can strike fear or joy into a designer's heart "I know what I want".
Dermot flipped this on its head, explaining that people actually want what they know/what they've seen. So they want an extension like their neighbours or their friends, it's their point of reference for something outside their normal expertise.
So as a specialist in his field, he shows clients what's possible, what's a good fit, things perhaps they would never have thought of or seen in their experience. It's often a world away from what they thought they wanted.
The same with design. You might come to me saying you want to be like Uber or Nike or whatever brands you have consumed and feel good about. It's my job as a designer to show you the whole picture and what will work for you, for your audience and for your USP.
So I'm not dismissing what you want right now, I'm showing you there's a world of possible solutions out there to see first. Let me show you.
