If your business uses WhatsApp to communicate with customers, you should pay attention.
Soon, you'll be able to use a username instead of asking customers to contact you via your phone number. The rollout has started in phases and will continue over the coming months, so not everyone in Ireland will have access immediately. When it becomes available on your account, I'd recommend claiming your username straight away.
Why this matters for businesses:
- Protect your brand: Secure the same username you use on Instagram and Facebook before someone else does. Meta is encouraging businesses to keep usernames consistent across its platforms.
- Build trust: A recognisable username is far more professional than asking customers to save a phone number.
- Improve your marketing: You'll be able to direct customers to a simple instead of displaying your mobile number across your website, social media, business cards and advertising.
What you should do now:
- Decide on the username you want (ideally matching your other social platforms).
- Update WhatsApp to the latest version.
- Keep an eye on Settings → Account → Username (or your profile settings on iPhone). As the rollout reaches Ireland, you'll be able to reserve it.
This might seem like a small update, but it's another step towards businesses having a more consistent identity across every digital platform.
